Kanonkop Estate has been described by those in the know as being the South African equivalent of a French First Growth.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Bright deep ruby red colour. The nose shows cassis, raspberries, cherries, black plums, cinnamon, allspice and a hint of chocolate. The palate is lively and fresh, with succulent summer berry flavours. The fruit is supported by a firm, yet silky tannin structure. Savoury notes persist on the lengthy finish.
Fermentation took place in open top concrete fermenters at 28°C. The floating skins were punched down mechanically every 2 hours during fermentation. The juice was drawn off the skins after 3 – 5 days. After malolactic fermentation the wine was matured for 12 months in older 225L French Nevers oak barrels."
89/100 Julie Sheppard, Decanter, October 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Here's a perfect winter wine from top South African winemaker Abrie Beeslar. A blend of roughly equal parts Pinotage, Merlot and Cab Sauv, with dashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it spends 12 months in French oak. A satisfying red with aromas of cassis, mint and blackcurrant leaf, followed by a super-smooth palate of ripe black berries and plums, with hints of spice and graphite, plus silky tannins."
