James Halliday's 2020 Winery of the Year
A new vintage of Jim Barry Cover Drive and yet again it comes up with all the right stuff. Cover Drive has long been one of our most popular Australian Cabernets and at this price, it is certainly one of the best value. This Coonawarra and Clare Valley blend is deep, full and coming out swinging, it really has got it covered!
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions of 1950. The cricket ground was retired in 1996. The following year, Jim Barry was fortunate to purchase the 30-acre property which he then planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon, first released in 2001, has been inspired by the great cricketing history of this vineyard. The wines consistently show great line and length.
The nose leads with aromas of fresh tobacco leaf, cassis, boysenberry and spice. A silk like entry on the palate with super fine, detailed tannin, ripe berried fruits, a hint of tobacco and the classic brambles of Clare Cabernet to finish."

5 Stars & 94/100 Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, October 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Deep, inky dark ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full, structured and herbaceous, with aromas of floral and cedar melded with blackcurrant, cherry, liquorice and mint. Medium-full bodied, aromas of succulent blackcurrant, cherry and blackberry entwined with liquorice, cedar, mint and rich earth. Firm, fine-grained tannin leaves a dry, mineral-rich palate, supported by a focused acid line and injects freshness to the rich fruit. This Cabernet Sauvignon shows ripe fruit with lively acid balance, mineral-rich and firm tannin structure. Match with beef steak and lamb over the next 5+ years. Fermented to 14% alc, aged 12 months in French oak."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"A gorgeous expression of the variety, showing blackcurrant, bay leaf, smoked game and roasted nut characters on the nose, leading to a succulent palate offering supple texture and chalky tannins. Well composed and structured with layers of attractive flavours, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2030."
