Henschke Henrys Seven shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Deep crimson with violet hues. Fragrant aromas of raspberry, plum and boysenberry are layered with notes of sage, black pepper, mace and cocoa, and floral nuances of vanilla flower. A rich and supple palate of dark plum, cherry and crushed blackberry flavours is well-balanced by vibrant acidity and fine, savoury tannins that lead to a long, peppery finish.
Viognier co-fermented with shiraz; grenache and mataro fermented separately. Matured in 100% seasoned French oak hogsheads for 8 months prior to blending and bottling."

"The beautify of the season is captured wonderfully in this excellent blend of shiraz, grenache, mataro and a tony amount of viognier. Bright high energy red fruits with a spicy lift on the finish. Its more in the medium bodied zone but it certainly packs plenty of palate intensity delivered with a degree of finesse largely as a result of the subtle use of seasoned oak. This is a wine that has moved from its early iterations to one of more sophistication and poise."

"Always a delicious and alluring wine, Henry’s Seven is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Viognier from the Barossa (72%, 15%, 11% and just a dollop of 2% for the Viognier, respectively). The Viognier is co-fermented with Shiraz, while the Grenache and Mataro are fermented separately. The wine is matured in seasoned French oak for eight months. A vibrant magenta hue, we have aromas of chocolate, dried herbs, tobacco leaves, spices, a touch of mocha and cassis. Showing a seamless, seductive texture, there is bright acidity and good length, finishing with slightly chalky tannins. With good focus and balance throughout, this is delicious now and will be over the next five to eight years, longer in good cellars over which time has the potential to improve on this score."

"It’s drinking very nicely. We get vigor, we get raspberried fruit, we get tips of blue berries and violets and sweet, woodsy spices. In short we get a lovely array of flavour, served clean/fresh but in decent volume too. It’s a bit of a no-brainer, this one. It just works. There’s always been a smidgen of Viognier in Henry’s Seven and all it does here is add to the general sense of liveliness. Add subtle mocha and sweet-leaf notes and you’re away."
