Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"An uplifting array of florals combine with crunchy red apple, cranberries and freshly squeezed lemonade. Off-dry in style, the silken palate is bursting with nectarine, mandarin and lemon blossom flavours, with hints of vanilla bean and star anise. A racy backbone of acidity proves the perfect juxtaposition to the wine’s generous aromatics and lingering complex finish.
Organically farmed grapes were grown at Ashmore Vineyard in Fairhall, adjacent to the mouth of the Brancott Valley, on gravelly clay-loam soils. Conditions here are more typical of the Southern Valleys than the Wairau plains. This 26-year-old BioGro certified vineyard is trained on a two-cane VSP (vertical shoot positioning) trellis and is rigorously shoot- and fruit-thinned to regulate yield."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2022 Vintage)
"Vibrant, off-dry riesling with intense lime and oyster shell flavours. Sweet/sour interaction gives the wine an exquisite tension. I have little doubt that the wine will age well, although it is delicious now."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2022 Vintage)
"The 2022 vintage is a single-vineyard wine, grown at Fairhall. Hand-harvested, it was fermented in a 50/50 split of tanks and old French oak barriques, then blended and fully oak-aged for five months. Bright, light yellow/green, it is a full-bodied style of riesling, with concentrated, ripe, peachy flavours, showing excellent depth, delicacy and vigour, considerable complexity, gentle sweetness (19 grams/litre of residual sugar), balanced acidity, and a very harmonious, persistent finish. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2025+."
94/100 Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review (2022 Vintage)
"Bright gold. Instantly complex and beguiling perfume with hints of toasty development. Spice, dried roses, hints of honey and mushroom all combine into a pot-pourried amalgam of aromas. Medium-dry on the palate, light and elegant but with lovely complexity and a feathery texture surrounds this flowing wine as it slides into a nicely tapered mid-weight apple and grapefruit flavours with just enough phenolic grip to give it definition on the mid-length finish. Already quite complex, this is approachable now and shows early tertiary development."
93/100 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous (2022 Vintage)
"The 2022 Riesling evokes fresh Alpine air and sonorous acidity: it reminds me of Maria holding her arms outstretched and singing, 'The hills are alive with The Sound of Music.’ Pure, pristine and pleasurable, it has pretty aromatics of flowers, a talcum powder funk that I associate with wild-yeast fermentation and a balanced citrus note. It is highly pleasurable with an excellent sugar-acid balance and fine texture. The 2022 does what you want Riesling to do."
