Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"A deliciously spicy Marlborough pinot, bursting with ripe fruit fragrance. Red and black cherries, super-ripe strawberries, dark-fleshed plums and juicy blackberries – poached with a stick of cinnamon, some cloves and a sprinkle of nutmeg. The ethereal, but finely structured palate combines concentrated varietal character, with earthy nuances and a distinctive smoky complexity.
The grapes were hand-harvested and chilled overnight prior to hand-sorting. Most of the fruit was then destemmed into open-top fermenters, the majority of which also had a percentage of whole-bunch inclusion. The fruit was left to soak on skins prior to the onset of indigenous yeast fermentation, then plunged daily. After fermentation, the wine was pressed, racked and filled into French oak barriques (30% new). Individual clones were barrel-aged separately for 11 months, prior to blending in February 2022."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, December 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Deliciously fruity pinot with bright black cherry, cassis, blackcurrant and a suggestion of smoky oak. It has got ""drink me"" written all over it but it could surprise anyone with enough willpower to put it out of sight for a decade."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"Still unfolding, the well-structured, ageworthy 2021 vintage was grown on hillsides in the Southern Valleys (mostly Yarrum Vineyard, on the Brancott/Ben Morven ridge), hand-harvested, and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new). Deep, bright ruby, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and supple, with concentrated cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, hints of earthiness, excellent complexity and good tannin backbone. Showing strong personality, it should be at its best 2026+."
94/100 Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com, November 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"‘Dark chocolate, walnuts, dried flowers, orange peel, and lead pencil. Medium-bodied with firm and racy tannins that give a linear feel and focus to this wine. Compact and polished tannins that run deep into the wine. Solid and curated texture."
93/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review (2021 Vintage)
"Deep, dark purple-edged colour; very savoury nose with dusty earth/terracotta and oaky aromas and a little meatiness. The wine is robust, full and rich, with density and slightly chewy grip, plums and strong savoury notes, not a 'pretty' pinot but generous. A power-packed and firmly structured pinot that needs food and/or time."
93/100 Erin Larkin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2021 Vintage)
"‘Layered with red apple blossom, cherry, strawberry, hints of pomegranate molasses and black tea, the 2021 Pinot Noir is floral and pretty on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is all of these things, lingering through the detailed and finessed finish. The silty tannins speak to the Southern Valleys vineyard from which the fruit is sourced. There is density ensconced with the light framework of the wine. Very good!"
