Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Vibrant aromatics of blackcurrant, white pepper, subtle smoke and full red fruits with a vivid colour. The palate is full and spicy, with tightly knit tannins through concentrated fruit flavours. A sustained finish drinking well now and will reward cellaring!

Among the earliest Syrah vines planted on the South Island, this hillside block was established in 2004 and covers less than three-quarters of a hectare on limestone slopes. Devoted solely to Syrah clone 470, it produces naturally small yields – just 200 cases in 2023. Hand sorted and destemmed into small open-top fermenters, the fruit was cold soaked for a week, left on skins for a month, and gently pressed to French oak barriques. After 14 months’ maturation, it was estate bottled without fining or filtration. Now approaching 20 years of age, the vines bring a depth and structure that suggest real longevity in the cellar."

Greystone Wines is a family-owned vineyard located in the Waipara wine region in Canterbury, New Zealand. Since its establishment, the vineyard has quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the region, particularly their award-winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The vineyard is situated on the slopes of the Teviotdale Hills, which provide an ideal microclimate for growing grapes. The soils are rich in limestone, which gives the wines a unique mineral character. Greystone Wines is committed to sustainable viticulture practices, and they use a range of organic and biodynamic methods to manage their vineyards. They also have a strong focus on low-intervention winemaking, which allows the grapes to express their natural terroir.

The winery produces a range of wines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. As mentioned, all of the wines are made using traditional methods, with a focus on minimal intervention and maximum expression of the vineyard's unique terroir.

One of the standout wines from Greystone Wines is their Pinot Noir. Past recognition includes being judged Best International Pinot Noir by Decanter Magazine, with its complex nose of dark fruit, spice, and earthy undertones and a palate that is rich and full-bodied. The Chardonnay is another standout, with a beautiful balance of fruit and acidity, and a long, elegant finish.

Visitors to the vineyard can enjoy tastings and tours, and there is also a restaurant on site that serves locally sourced, seasonal food.
