Some of Sicily’s, and indeed the world’s, most exciting wines are grown on Mt. Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. This Etna Rosso is from 5 sites ranging from 650 to 800 metres above sea level. The mineral soils, old bush vines and late-ripening indigenous grape varietals yield wines of formidable structure and diversity.
Giovanni Russo, once a famed classical pianist, is considered one of the pioneers of Etna. The name “A Rina” refers to the sand that rains on the vines of Mt. Etna.
Etna, Sicily has become a hot spot for wine enthusiasts around the world so we are very fortunate to get our hands on this outstanding Red. Made from Nerello Mascalese and about 10% Nerello Cappuccio, this beautifully lithe wine shows that signature volcanic soil profile, with delicious wild strawberry and blue flower notes built on structured tannins that are energetic and integrated.
94/100 James Suckling (2022 Vintage)
"There is freshness here with redcurrants, pomegranate, black pepper, flowers and earthy notes. Medium- to full-bodied, this has sweet fruit on the palate, velvety tannins, an integrated, refreshing acidity and a brilliant finish. Delicious to drink now, though this crunchy wine has aging potential."
92/100 James Button, Decanter UK, September 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"’a Rina is a co-fermentation made from Giuseppe's various holdings on the north side of Etna, vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and open-top vats, then matured for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and concrete tanks. Perfumed, earthy and spicy, it's a vibrant and intense Etna Rosso, with zippy acidity driving raspberry, strawberry, cherry, blood orange and spice details. Beautiful."
92/100 Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April2 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"The Girolamo Russo 2022 Etna Rosso 'a Rina is a 40,000-bottle blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio. The winemaking approach consists of a simple formula that sees equal parts oak, cement and stainless steel. Fruit comes from across several sites, including Contrade Feudo, San Lorenzo and Calderara Sottana, which are fermented separately. It shows a mid-weight appearance and dark ruby highlights. The bouquet offers an interesting mix of dried berry, star anise, pressed rose and a savoury side with licorice and barbecue spice. The effect is quite open, immediate and charming, fundamentally."
