A classic (barely) off-dry German Riesling from a master of the genre. This wonderfully affordable label from Fritz Haag label is light-bodied and more dry than off-dry, with a delicate fruit impression balanced with lovely acidity.
The Haag family has been in wine for just a little while – since 1605, to be precise – and over that time they have been instrumental in the development of Brauneberger, an area that has been recognised as one of the Mosel’s best since the sixth century. At the helm today is the youthful Oliver Haag, whose father Wilhelm (son of Fritz) became recognised as a Riesling world leader, awarded the deceptively simple title of Winegrower of the Year in 1994. Oliver himself has at his back a full oenological training as well as extensive experience with a number of leading Riesling producers. With results so superb they effectively define a modern classic style of Mosel Riesling, it seems clear that the Haag family’s future in wine may be as sure as it’s past.

"This off dry wine surprises me every year. I keep thinking that it should be a completely ordinary estate wine, and every time it sets a new benchmark in the estate wine sector. All hand-picked, all from steep slopes. Every year one of the country’s stars in the estate wine sector. A good portion of the wine comes from the Mülheimer Sonnenlay and the Brauneberger Klostergarten, as well as from the Juffer and Monzeler Kätzchen, so top-notch material. This estate wine from Oliver Haag is a sure bet every year, always bright and fine. Great slate spice, white pepper and white peach, with a hint of green pear among them. All estate fruit, totally clean, and the citrus notes are kept in check, by no means dominating. This is a very fine wine, crystal-clear and focused. Oliver Haag is becoming increasingly focused, serious, and a bit more sophisticated, even in the base wine, which, however, also performs far above its class. Many would be happy if they could sell such quality as a local or single-vineyard wine."

"The 2024 Riesling feinherb is off-dry. This dances onto the nose and palate with lemony charm and slate poise. Yes, there is slight residual sugar but it sinks into the cool stone, presenting a Riesling of immense harmony on a light body. The 2024 is quintessential Mosel in a good way. (Dry)."
