Viognier may not be your first choice variety but this is just so delicious and such good value it should be! Falconhead is produced by the Wine Portfolio, which previously included the Morton Estate label. The wonderful exotic nose leads you into the soft, rich, and flavoursome palate. There's an array of flavours – fresh apricot, lemons, peach. A portion is barrel fermented adding a good textural element and a vanillin character.

Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Lifted aromas of apricot and white pear. The palate displays succulent citrus fruit and honeysuckle flavours with gentle acidity and a persistent, balanced finish. This wine is drinking well now but can be cellared for up to 5 years.

The grapes for this wine came from our Tantallon and Campbells Brook vineyards in Hawkes Bay. They were machine harvested and transported to our Riverview winery where they were pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. A variety of yeasts were used but predominantly 58W3. Following maturation and settling in tank the wine was tankered to our Katikati winery for final blending, finishing, and bottling."

5 Stars & Number 1 Cuisine Speciality Whites Tasting, February 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Winning the top wine at a Cuisine tasting is a big deal, even if we do say so ourselves. It means you have come up against similar wines from all around both New Zealand and the rest of the world at different price points and your wine has surpassed them all. To win such an accolade more than once is quite a feat, especially when it’s been assessed by different judges. To win it two tastings in a row is surely an assurance of consistent quality.

While last year’s winner was the 2019 Falconhead Hawke’s Bay Viognier, this year’s top wine is the 2021 vintage and the judges were seriously impressed by this wine. On the nose, apricots, white blossom, stalky citrus notes alongside crystallised meringue aromas made this wine so lovely to savour in the glass before proceeding to taste. The complex palate is equally intriguing with elegance and a hint of spice blossom and although a dry style, there is a concentration to the palate that makes it feel opulent and rich. The palate is beautifully balanced with a delicate, refined style and cleverly integrated supple oak which leads to a long satisfying finish.

It’s not unheard of for wineries to increase the prices of wines when they win an award, as the acknowledgement leads to increased demand. However, at only $16, this beautiful viognier is still as good value as it was last year. A best buy indeed."

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2021 (2021 Vintage)
"Very enticing bouquet with aromas of flowers then ripe white fleshed apricot, some peach and apple then a touch of toasty spice and mineral. On the palate – soft and silky textured with some contrasting acidity, plenty of weight and drive. As the wine opens up on the palate flavours of spicy flowers and stone fruit become more intense and classic with a lovely concentration and length. A delicious example with subtlety and finesse, floral charms and a core of fruit. Best drinking from 2022 through 2025."

5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2021 (2021 Vintage)
"Varietally expressive and youthfully charming, the bouquet shows apricot, mandarin, rockmelon and mixed spice aromas, leading to a supple palate that's rounded and lingering. It's smooth and fleshy with mellow acidity, finishing smooth and comforting. At its best: now to 2024."

Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"Offering top value, the 2021 vintage is already enjoyable. A weighty, robust wine, it has generous, ripe, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, a touch of barrel-ferment complexity, and a fresh, dryish (5.4 grams/litre of residual sugar), seductively smooth finish."
