Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Our Home Block vineyard is located in the Mangatahi sub-region, inland with 150 metres elevation and is tilted on a 6-degree angle to the North. These factors, combined with our vested hands in the vineyard, produce fruit with individual character and intensity. Dry farmed, hand Picked, 100% whole bunch fermented, unfined. 13 months in seasoned Classic French Oak Puncheons.
Deep garnet colour with vivid crimson hues. Aromatically abounds with black cherry, blueberry, aniseed, a hint of tar and whisp of black pepper. The palate is rich and persistent with mouth filling fruit coated in fine fruit tannin."
91/100 Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review, January 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"This is from the Mangatahi district, up-river and inland from the main winegrowing areas of the Ngaruroro. La Niña weather patterns led to a hot summer with autumn rains, requiring strict fruit selection. The 100% whole-bunch fermentation and short two-week cuvaison has resulted in a particularly perfumed and more delicate syrah.
Slightly herbal nose with bay leaf and dried mint, light inflections of black fruit, fenugreek and crushed seed spices with mocha undertones. Subtle and delicate. The palate continues this thread of lightness, adding some floral notes and coriander seed to the mildly herbal finish. Light-weight flavours float elegantly across the palate while very fine tannins work with fresh acidity to give a sense of airiness and lift. A good effort from a challenging vintage. For mid-term ageing."
