This comes from gnarled 70-year-old vines in neighbouring Gigondas. Its 70% Grenache base gives it a juicy fluidity and composure. 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre add their peppery spice and frame to the win beautifully. This is absolutely spot-on southern Rhône joy in a glass.
Archimbaud-Vache family – owners of Clos des Cazaux – is one of the oldest families in Vacqueyras, with roots dating back to 1791. Even the building containing its tasting cellars dates back to this era, although the family has since expanded across the southern Rhone. The property is currently run by brothers Jean-Michel and Frederic Vache.
The Clos des Cazaux vineyards in Vacqueyras are beautiful, well-exposed suntraps, becoming so hot in the summer that the grapes ripen around two weeks earlier than the hilly, cooler Gigondas sites.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This strong, warm wine comes from a selection of grapes on exceptio nal land. In fact our vineyards in Gigondas are situated on the arid hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The Mistral blows regularly on these slopes which limits the amount of treatment needed to the vines. The vines grow in stony fields, which is rare, and produce wine that can be kept easily for 10 yrs. Aromas of pepper, red fruits, are intense and persistent; very interes ting to discover young. Its robe is steady, stable, the tannins silky, some say feminine compared to the more rustic Vacqueyras."
94/100 Josh Raynolds, Vinous, January 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"Deep, brilliant ruby colour. Sharply focused, spice-tinged black raspberry, cherry, pot-pourri and garrigue scents pick up a smoky mineral nuance with air. This offers concentrated raspberry, kirsch, succulent herb and floral pastille flavours, lifted by a suggestion of white pepper. Fine-grained tannins come in slowly and add shape and grip to a strikingly long, floral driven finish, showing firm tension and final cut. Raised in concrete and stainless steel tanks."
