Double Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2023
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"A wine of character and one Daniel has been producing since 2009. As with every Decibel Malbec release, the colour is an intense deep purple. Initial aromas reveal fragrant violets, cardamom pods, and ripe plums, the lush fruitiness powered by the warmth of the growing season and unique soil composition of the Highway 50 Gravels. Complex layers of bramble, blackberry, and black cherry interplay against the hallmark bright acidity and soft tannins of Decibel Malbec. With it's fruit and spice balance, this is easy to pair with a broad range of flavours, try with grilled vegetables, barbecued meats, or boldly spiced dishes.
The 2021 growing season was exceptional with a warm summer being followed by a very dry autumn, providing optimal conditions for ripening red grapes. The resultant wines from this season are brilliant in tannin structure while still holding a generous fruit character. While delicious young, this wine has excellent aging potential.
After picking in early April, the fruit had a 5 day cold soak before natural fermentation kicked in. After an average of 25 days on skins, the wine was pressed to neutral French Oak barrels. The wine aged in oak barriques for 21 months before bottling in late March 2023."
4 ½ Stars Cuisine NZ Bordeaux Style Red, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Powerful fruit intensity is immediately evident on the nose with dark and purple fruits set against herbal greens and some spice. The velvety palate is rich and concentrated with a soft, well-rounded mouth feel, bright acid and a heady finish."
93/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, September 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Dense, inky red with chocolate/mocha, red-fleshed plum, cassis and peppery/spice characters. Strongly varietal wine with a dusty texture and lingering finish. The product of a very favourable vintage."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Dark purple and ruby core of colour with a youthful fuchsia pink rim lead to a bouquet of dark fleshy plums, black currants and milk chocolate scents. Dark roses and boysenberry then fruit spices and dry clay soil suggestions. Dry, fruity, plenty of weight and freshness with contrasting fruit tannins, medium+ alcohol warmth and bold acid line. Very youthful still with plenty of energy and vibrato. Best drinking from late 2025 through 2032+."
92/100 David Walker Bell, WineFolio.co.nz, April 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"A wine made by Daniel Brennan in Hawke’s Bay – winner of a Gold Medal at the NZIWS in 2023. An opaque purple, with magenta at the edges. Deeply aromatic – a flush of black cherry, damson, bramble, spice and floral aromas come tumbling from the glass. As well as that lush, fleshy fruit, there is a solid framework of crisp acidity and plentiful, but supple, tannin. A confident and attention-grabbing wine that has a lot going on, but retains balance and drive through the complexities of the palate. It has enough definition of the variety to please, and should age very well. Finishes smooth and with good length."
92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Classic dried rose perfume, blueberry, plum, biscuit spice. Medium-bodied, tight grainy powdery tannin, freshness and flavour, some tobacco and dried herb, bright mineral acidity with a dense and compact tannic finish of good length. Stylish. Excellent Malbec."
