Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Wrekin is precision and purity. Cooler fruit, brilliant clarity. Round but clean and so well defined. The Wrekin occupies its own small locality tucked into the foothills of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys. Farmed bio-dynamically by Jeremy Hyland, together with owners Jan and Andrew Johns, it is fast becoming a site of significance on the region’s vineyard landscape. North to nor-east orientated on rolling foothills, The Wrekin’s clay soils, which are laid over greywacke parent rock, contribute hugely to the singularity of the wines made from this site."

"Attractive nose of peaches, preserved lemons, fresh nuts, acacia blossoms, mustard seeds, spices and seashells. Very clean and pristine, almost weightless, yet it’s full, broad and firm in structure. Racy and energetic, with a long finish that lingers and a tense, restrained flinty note. Drink or hold."
95/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, October 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"White nectarine, poached pear, citrus, almond and white flowers.. It’s tight with bright grapefruity acidity and chalky texture, but also has flavour with almond cream, stone fruit, a green apple twang, and some savoury and saline characters on a finish of excellent length. Such a lovely and distinctive wine here."
5 Stars & 95/100 Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review, February 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"Several small producers draw fruit from Wrekin and this chardonnay from Mike and Anna Patterson is a success in 2023. They pick on the earlier side and this has helped to retain the core of acidity in the wine as well its finesse. Of the single vineyards they release each year, the Wrekin chardonnay was the standout.
This is currently austere and restrained but holds a lot of promise. It holds a saline, deep-seated intensity which has measured oxidative complexity. The driven and concentrated flavours are tight and green, with fennel seed, green olive and apple stretching across its structured, firm yet elegantly sleek palate. Complexity comes in ribbons of white flowers, chalk and oyster-shell which meet on the long, chewy finish. Built on a framework of phenolics and taut acidity, this has a long life ahead. Let it unfurl and gain savoury, nutty complexity over the years to come."
