Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Named after the ancient glaciation period that formed this exceptional terroir, Waimaunga is the purest expression of the clay soils found on the hills of our estate. Formed 250,000 years ago, these rich, layered soils result in wines with density, generosity and richness.

The Waimaunga Pinot Noir 2024 offers an alluring aromatic profile of raspberry, pomegranate and black cherry, grounded by savoury black pepper and toasted hazelnut notes. On the palate, the wine is characteristically opulent yet remains balanced and precise. Velvet tannins frame a plush landscape of dark fruit, culminating in a long, flavourful finish.

After hand picking, bunches are carefully sorted and between 10 20% is kept as whole cluster while the rest is destemmed before being transferred under gravity into large French oak vats with no crushing. After spending a week cold soaking, natural fermentation begins. We are looking for light extraction through gentle pump overs and avoiding plunging to rely on alcoholic extraction. Fermentation and Post-fermentation maceration lasts up to three weeks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 100% French oak barrels, 20% of which is new."

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"Focused, complex, varietal and intriguing bouquet with a core of pinosity lead by scents of dark plum and dark cherry flesh, there’s a potpourri of dark rose and wild flowers then a mineral-earthy seam of clay and tilled soil. A taut, firm and poised wine on the palate with firm polished tannin textures, dried herb, a backbone of acidity and vibrant core of concentration and voice of place. Lengthy, firm and ready to drink from 2028 through 2038."

95/100 JamesSuckling.com (2024 Vintage)
"A broad wine with volume, drive and energy. On the nose it displays crushed raspberries, red cherries, wet stones and some wild herbs. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins. The palate is quite opulent but remains balanced and precise, with a long, lively, flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes."
