Gold Medal – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2024
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"The Bannockburn Pinot Noir is Carrick's flagship wine, and the wine that we feel best represents the strong connection we have with our site. Known for its structure and ability to age well over a long period of time, the fruit is hand-picked from a selection of vineyards across the estate, parcels that were 27 years old in 2021. The 2021 growing season was cool to start, with heat spikes around January and a cooler harvest period, the harvest period was longer than normal, as each parcel took it's time to come fully to ripeness.
The 2021 Bannockburn Pinot has an autumnal tone – earthy, smoky and slightly subdued. Best decanted to truly open it up, it has great balance with fine tannins, as well as good length and finesse."
5 Stars Michael Cooper, July 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"A regional classic. Certified organic, the classy, vigorous 2021 vintage was hand-picked from estate-grown, mature vines – then 27 years old – and aged for nine months in French oak casks (19 per cent new). Already delicious, but well worth cellaring, it is ruby hued, with mouthfilling body. Refined and youthful, it is very savoury, with deep, ripe cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity, fresh acidity, finely balanced tannins and a long, very harmonious finish. Best drinking 2026+."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, December 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Youthful, savoury, bright, fruity and varietal with core flavours of plums and raspberries laced with dried herbs and that rugged Otago landscape quality. Complex and dry on the palate, a wine that needs to be allowed to mature and develop. Firm tannins and plenty of acidity with core flavours of red berries and plums, a savoury spice and barrel flavours all add complexity and length. Best drinking from 2026 through 2036. I am keen to try this wine again in late 24 or early 25 to gauge its progress, I’m excited."
