This is the result of a collaboration between Matt Broomhead (winemaker at Three Dark Horses) and David Healy (NZ wine importer and distributor).
From a Single vineyard in the McLaren Vale with vines planted 1965. Hand-picked from just 12 rows, Basket pressed and aged in Tonnellerie-Baron premium French oak (30% new) for 2 years. Just 8 barrels selected.
This is a dark, inky coloured wine that almost glugs out of the bottle. Rich, plummy, fruit cake flavours. There is an old style intensity that is big, chewy and mouth coating. This tastes like the extremely serious wine that it is. At $26 it really is a steal!
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Small batch and hamemade from just 12 rows of Broomhead's Schuller Road single vineyard. From gnarly old Shiraz vines planted in 1965. Vintage 2024 produced outstanding Shiraz rich in colour. Plush fruit, and fine-grained tannins."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"Opulent and enticing, the bouquet showcases black- and purple-fruit intensity, vanilla, cake spice, cedar, and dark cocoa aromas. It's concentrated and plush in the mouth, delivering terrific weight and persistence. Wonderfully framed by layers of silky tannins, making it sumptuous and delectably appealing."
And as Matt and David say – “We won’t bore you with the usual descriptives, you be the judge of this old school Shiraz. Drink with gusto!”
