Produced from a selection of the best grapes from Gonzales Byass oldest vineyards in the elevated Rioja Alta region, Beronia Rioja Reserva spends 18 months in mixed oak barrels with American staves and French tops and then further ageing in bottle before release. Full of dark fruits and spice, it's beautifully balanced and whilst the oak is evident, it melds seamlessly into the wine.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"A sophisticated nose of black fruits and sweet cinnamon spice. Soft tannins weave through the lush, black fruit base, balanced by notes of cacao, roasted hazelnut and a touch of pepper.
After the careful harvest of our very best grapes, our Reserva begins its fermentation. This is a slow and controlled process, enabling all the colour and aroma from the grapes to be extracted. Over eighteen months in mixed French and American oak barrels, the wine gradually develops its trademark smoothness and complexity, furthered by spending eighteen months in bottle prior to release."
90/100 Wine Spectator (2019 Vintage)
"A balanced, medium-bodied version, with light, taut tannins providing fine-grained texture and support for flavours of mulled cherry, tobacco, red licorice and cocoa powder, this is creamy and fragrant on the finish. Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano. Drink now through 2029."

"Attractive nose with a hint of walnut husk and dark earth to the black cherries and sweet tobacco. A hint of truffle and sous-bois, too. Medium-bodied on the palate with firm, dusty tannins that grow and extend in a long, succulent finish. Tempranillo, graciano and mazuelo."
92/100 Wine Enthusiast (2018 Vintage)
"Deep violet to the eye, this wine has a nose of black plum, dark chocolate and dried hillside herbs. Bold red berry flavours are joined by plush tannins and deeper notes of mocha, truffle and thyme. As flavours and textures wind down on the palate, a note of orange zest remains."
Wine of the Week & Very Good Value, Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinsom.com, April 2022 (2017 Vintage)
"'The fruit aromas on this wine are almost outrageously expressive – so intense yet so spunky that I wanted to laugh out loud on just one sniff of them! Ridiculously, deliciously jam-packed with this firework-flung handful of coruscatingly bright fruit that is simply irresistible. A Catherine-wheel of plums and damsons. Delicious peppery and fine-ground cumin spice. Blood orange and exploding with white pepper… light, tight tannins but absolutely delicious. It would be incredibly difficult, having tasted this, to leave it in the rack long enough to age. Although Calleja assures us it will."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2022 (2017 Vintage)
"A lovely classic bouquet with aromas of dark red fruits, a bourbon barrel vanilla richness, wood smoke and dark baking spices. Equally powerful on the palate with flavours of raspberry and red berries, currants and toasty wood and vanilla spice layers. Firmish tannins and acidity bring contrast and mouth as well as complexity and Rioja charm. Excellent drinking from 2022 through 2029."
