Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Our flagship Irongate Vineyard is situated in an old shingle bed of the Ngaruroro River in the Gimblett Gravels appellation of Hawke’s Bay. First produced in 1987, this single vineyard wine has evolved to represent the very best of our craft. Crop-levels are heavily restricted to deliver excellent flavour concentration in the grapes, with the final blend delivering a rich, round and complex wine.
Blackberry, blueberry, cigar box and plum aromas. Inviting and warm with a touch of spice, charcuterie and well-integrated oak. Smooth and seamless with layers of sweet dark fruits, cocoa, leather, cedar and liquorish. Dense, concentrated and vibrant with a long finish."
5 Stars Michael Cooper, June 2024 (2018 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in the Irongate Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, this is a refined Hawke’s Bay blend of cabernet sauvignon (43%), merlot (40%) and cabernet franc (17%). Matured for more than a year in French oak barriques, it is deeply coloured, mouthfilling, savoury and firm. It has strong, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours seasoned with nutty oak and excellent backbone and vigour."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2024 (2018 Vintage)
"Complex and enticing, the wine shows blackcurrant, tobacco, game, roasted nut and warm spice aromas on the nose. It's wonderfully weighted on the palate delivering refined texture and supple mouthfeel, beautifully framed by layers of chalky tannins, making it splendidly structured and lingering."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, February 2024 (2018 Vintage)
"A lovely bouquet filled with scents of dark berries and earth, wood smoke and barrel spices of clove and vanilla pod. There’s a fine toasty quality adding complexity and depth. Firm, dry and full-bodied on the palate with flavours that reflect the bouquet cushioned against the textures of tannins and acidity. Bottle-age has delivered all it will, this is a well made, dry, lengthy and nicely complex. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2030+."
