Giusto Occhipinti of COS is a benchmark producer in the Vittoria appellation of Sicily, and certainly one of the most important, influential, producers in all of Sicily if not Italy as a whole. The winery was founded in 1980 by three friends, Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti, and Cirino Strano. The initials of their last names form the winery’s name. The winery is practicing organic and ferments in amphorae using natural, ambient yeast.
This Frappato comes from their estate vineyards in Vittoria from red clay soils. Fermentation and aging is all done in cement with three months aging in the bottle before its release.
Light bodied and almost Beaujolais-like, the brightness of fruit, combined with the acidity present in Frappato, make this the perfect wine to chill lightly. Vibrant red berry fruits lifted with hints of blossom and violets and is very light on the tannins making a superb juicy red.
92/100 Eric Guido, Vinous (2022 Vintage)
"Remarkably pretty, the 2022 Frappato opens with a cascade of violets and lavender, giving way to citrus and blackberries. It's soft and soothing on the palate with ripe wild berry fruits and licorice motivated by crisp acidity. It finishes long and with a liquid floral staining, yet freshness is expertly maintained through it all. The 2022 goes down far too quickly and at just 12.5% abv."
