Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Very low cropping levels with the warm days and cool nights characteristic of this region, produce a rich, full-bodied wine with velvety tannins, spice, and great finesse. The Syrah is a first for Ataahua Wines and a variety we are very excited about. The lower terraces with lighter gravelly soils and full sun are ideal for growing this variety and developing full flavoured and concentrated wines.

The fruit is harvested late in the autumn and destemmed before fermentation is in small vats with indigenous yeast, and plunged by hand. The wine is then pressed then matured in French oak barriques for 18 months, during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation.

The bouquet shows plum, wild cherry, dark cocoa, and floral characters with nuances of tamarillo and savoury spice. The palate delivers full fruit concentration and richness, supported by silky texture and fine grained tannins."

In te reo, Ataahua means 'a place of beauty'.

Ataahua's vineyard covers 8.24 hectares in Waipara Valley, North Canterbury wine country. It is planted on central Waipara's Glasnevin soils, situated on the Weka River terraces (taking advantage of a micro-climate unique in New Zealand).

Syrah and Pinot Noir grapes grow on the lower terrace, an area fed with mulch to build up the soil structure.

Pinot Noir grows on the middle and top terraces, while Riesling and Chardonnay plantings also grow on the clay loam soil of the top terrace.

Ataahua is a family-run vineyard, worked by multiple generations of the Henderson-Grants whānau and their team.

Ataahua are committed to sustainability and, as such, are certified sustainable. This entails looking after the land with future generations in mind, and for Ataahua this means strategically planting natives to aim for carbon neutrality and undertaking other practical endeavours such as rain water collection for irrigation.
