Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Our Pinot Gris was originally influenced by the style of wines from Alsace, and has developed over the years into our own, uniquely Martinborough style. Gentle aromas of lychee, lemon and ginger are the focus of the 2023 Pinot Gris. The palate is fresh and finely textured with flavours of coriander seed, lemon verbena and a hint of Turkish Delight. Fresh acidity ties this generous, complex wine together, giving a long and satisfying finish to the palate.

From vines now over 26 years of age, the depth and complexity of flavour on the palate make it one of our favourite and versatile wine matching choices. The fresh vibrancy of the fruit aromas make for a charming aperitive while the weight on the palate balances dishes with heady spice and/or challenging flavours. Fermented in neutral barrels for extra texture, this Pinot Gris will benefit from bottle age.

Fruit hand-picked and whole bunch pressed. Juice taken to large format barrels with minimal settling. Spontaneous native yeast fermentation and then ageing on lees for 6 months. No malolactic fermentation."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2023 (2023 Vintage)
"Splendidly fruited and elegantly fragrant, showing Asian pear, rockmelon, lemon peel and oatmeal notes, it's gorgeously textured in the mouth displaying excellent weight and youthful fruit intensity. Offering excellent clarity and finesse with delicate complexity, finishing long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2030."

In Te Reo Māori, Ata Rangi means “dawn sky” or “new beginning,” a name that honours the land and reflects the winery's dedication to its craft. This small, family-owned organic winery in Martinborough, Aotearoa-New Zealand, focuses on creating wines that embody the essence of their place. Founded by Clive Paton in 1980, Ata Rangi has grown from its humble beginnings on a stony sheep paddock. Clive’s sister Alison and his partner Phyll Pattie soon joined him, and today, Alison oversees operations while Helen Masters crafts the wines, supported by vineyard manager Ian Ewart.

Ata Rangi's winemaking philosophy is hands-off and traditional, emphasising the natural expression of their terroir. They aim for balance, using whole bunch fermentation and barrel ageing to enhance vineyard characteristics. Each vintage uniquely reflects its growing conditions, with cooler years bringing herbal notes and warmer seasons offering fuller fruit aromas. Their minimalist approach avoids cultured yeast, enzymes, and fining products, ensuring authentic wines with depth, texture, and ageing potential.
