Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The pinot noir at Comelybank is our most ‘Marlborough’ in flavour and structure. This site at the lower reaches of the Waihopai Valley is where the fruit for our first Marlborough pinot noir came from, and it still underpins our Marlborough Province blend. The fruit here gives bright, vibrant red cherry with svelte, plush tannins and an elegant structure. I feel that it reflects the Southern Valleys pinot noir region of Marlborough very truly and showcases what is great about Marlborough as a growing region for pinot noir.
The Comelybank Pinot Noir was made using traditional winemaking techniques of hand picking, wild fermentation with the natural yeast, managing the fermentation cap by hand and extended oak aging. For this wine, I am looking for a full, plush palate structure and attractive red and black cherry aromas.
Earthy and gamey aromas, with dark and red cherry and notes of clove and old rose. Rich, sweet, plush fruit on the palate, with concentrated, juicy plum and velvety tannins."

"Already delicious, the 2020 vintage was grown in the lower Waihopai Valley, hand-harvested and matured for 16 months in French oak casks. Finely textured, it is a bright ruby, full-bodied, savoury red, with concentrated, ripe berry and spice flavours, hints of herbs and nuts, impressive complexity, supple tannins and a very harmonious finish. Best drinking 2023+."

"Warm and generous bouquet, varietal, fruity, complex and intriguing. Aromas of earth and baking spice then dark cherry and raspberry, moderate toasty barrel layers and a youthful primary energy. On the palate – equally generous in flavour and texture, a core of red berry and black currant flavours accentuated and contrasted by an abundance of fine chalky tannins and acidity, toasty baking spice and lees flavours. Youthful and complex, generous and vibrant. A wine still in the early stages of development, but with great promise and varietal expression. Best drinking from late 2022 through 2029+"

"Plush, lithe and lengthy. These are hallmarks of the pinot noir which comes off Jeff and Vanessa Hammond’s Comelybank site near the confluence of the Waihopai and Wairau Rivers, where the Southern Valleys meet. Its handpicked fruit is wild-fermented, hand-plunged, and oak-matured to create an intensely lush wine with earthy spices, slick and velvety tannins, and cherry cola and cocoa notes to finish. The Waihopai is the largest of the Southern Valleys and can be considered a separate sub-region and produces beautifully balanced, tamarillo-tastic pinot that’ll satisfy the fussiest of souls."
