Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2022
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The grapes for this wine were sourced from the lower terrace of the Askerne vineyard, across different soil profiles from sandy silt through to gravels, giving wonderful complexity to the individual parcels that make up the blend. Each batch was fermented as individual varieties followed by extended post maceration on skins to build richness. After pressing, the wines were settled and racked to oak barriques. Here they completed malolactic fermentation and were matured for 12 months before blending. The final blend was made up of 46% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec, with a 35% new oak component and 35% second fill oak.
Aromas of dark and brooding fruit with sweet cassis, mocha and chocolate notes. Fleshy and full, the palate is juicy and rich with fine oak spice and concentrated dark berry fruit. The finish is broad and long with velvety smooth tannins. A wine of sophistication and underlying power."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper, September 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Well worth cellaring, the 2020 vintage is a deeply coloured blend of Merlot (46 per cent), Cabernet Franc (29 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (24 per cent) and a splash of Malbec. Matured in oak barrels (35 per cent new), it is full-bodied, with generous, ripe, plummy, spicy flavours, showing good complexity, supple tannins and a smooth finish. Best drinking 2024+."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2020 (2020 Vintage)
"Aromas of dark roasted plums and blackberry, some black currant then toasty wood spices. Youthful and complex with some violet and mineral highlights. Equally flavourful on the palate with a taut youthful mouthfeel. Firm tannins and acidity salivate the palate with contrasting red berry fruit flavours and a whisper of flinty saline suggestions. Well made with best drinking from 2024 through 2030. Decant for service and consider a cheese as an ideal pairing."
91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Elegantly complex and attractively fragrant, showing blackcurrant, Black Doris plum, floral, thyme and roasted nut aromas. It's beautifully flowing in the mouth offering ripe fruit intensity backed by fine texture and elegant tannins, finishing persistent and pleasingly dry. At its best: now to 2030."
