The King of the red grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon produces big-hitting rich, dark, blackcurrant and blackberry flavours. With its famous longevity and tannin punch, good Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced in wine regions the world over, not just in Bordeaux. Praise is due (if ever reluctantly) to the Australians, who are absolutely maximising the potential of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes thanks to prevailing warm conditions. But the warmer parts of New Zealand, including Auckland and Hawkeβs Bay, also produce a quality Kiwi cab sav if you care to sample the local offering.
