"Intriguing, hints of brine and a lick of cucumber. Harvest 2017 was testing but the steely resolve of Albariño proved its worth.

The nose shows a complex blend of soft flint with cucumber and hints of the sea. A little more generous than the 2016 and the palate balances the grape’s naturally high acidity. The wine flows effortlessly and offers a juicy surge, encouraging a second mouthful.

Albariño - a grape native to Northern Spain - Rias Baxias on the Atlantic Coast - home to some of the world’s best seafood – goose barnacles, prawns, clams and crab. Nelson is Australasia’s largest fishing port and we decided to plant a trial block several years ago. Once it was considered a wine to be drunk young but the modern take on Albariño allows you to cellar it comfortably.

We find it to be an approachable and refreshing wine with an intriguing character. To say this would be a match for Kai Moana is an understatement – drink with freshly shucked oysters or a slice of pan seared tuna."

"Bright straw-yellow colour with a little depth, paler on the rim. The nose is very elegant and finely concentrated with tightly bound, slender aromas of white florals and white stonefruits, along with a hint of saline and minerals. This has a good heart with intensity and presence. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a finely concentrated core of white stonefruits and white florals, along with subtle nutty and mineral elements unfolding saline detail. The fruit has good depth with light phenolic textures and crisp acidity lending a thirst-quenching mouthfeel. The textures carry the wine to a long, dry, zesty finish. This is a finely concentrated dry Albarino with white stonefruit and white floral flavours on a fine-textured palate with presence and taut acidity. Match with seafood over the next 2-3 years. 100% Albarino, hand-picked from ‘Rosie’s Block’, WBP and fully indigenous yeast fermented in stainless-steel with 20% in neutral puncheons to 12.5% alc. and 7.3 g/L RS, TA 7.5 g/L and pH 2.92. 258 cases made."

"Only the third vintage to be produced off a half-hectare portion of Rosie's Block, the 2017 Moutere Albariño is another example of how well this Iberian transplant seems to be taking to New Zealand soils. It's more floral than the Riesling and comes across as slightly richer and creamier, all while offering bold flavours of apple and citrus. Made all in tank, this medium-bodied wine is plump on the palate but fully dry."
