Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep northeast facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The 2015 Chardonnay comes from older plantings in the original Naboth’s Vineyard. The soil is young; a type of loam with volcanic ash and pumice over calcareous sedimentary rock. At 4,000 vines per hectare this vineyard is dry farmed and weeded by hand. Each shoot is individually positioned upwards to capture all of the sunlight.

The 2015 vintage is again an energetic, luminous wine. The hand-harvested grapes were gently pressed into barriques and the young juice underwent natural fermentation with vineyard yeasts. Only 10 months on primary yeast lees offers a biscuity richness to the primary fruit. Biodynamically we often talk about luminosity and this wine has a lovely brightness and smells like gold. Exotic perfumes of acorns, vanilla, and almonds welcome the finesse and delicacy combined with a full rich palate. These rich layered flavours give a chew and bite to the mouth. Complete with refreshing natural acidity. Very tactile.

A calcification of dryness is felt on the middle of the tongue with enhanced minerality, for which this vineyard is now well recognised, contributing to a palate of intense interest. Aging on the spent yeast lees for over ten months, without the use of sulphur dioxide, adds sweet yeast and shortbread and fills the mouth with a toasty, nutty richness. This incredible wine has length and tension and very good ageing potential."
97/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"An invasive and aromatic beginning but for a few moments then a complex and layered bouquet begins to unfold; minerals, wild flowers, yellow stone fruits and ripe red apple; cashew and brazil nut then a gentle oak spice and quiet toasted oak moment. On the palate – silken texture, complex flavour combinations, laden with wild flowers, yellow and white fruits and gentle oak spices. Dry, nearly full-bodied, great acid line, rich in palate feel and charm, a blessing to taste. Fantastic wine. Drink now and through 2028."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"A spectacular chardonnay showing elegance, refinement and complexity; the bouquet shows yellow stone fruit, fig, orange peel, hazelnut and subtle savoury notes. The palate delivers outstanding fruit concentration and weight, wonderfully enhanced by layers of fine texture and creamy mouthfeel. The wine is richly fruited yet restrained and poised, finishing superbly long and expansive. At its best: 2018 to 2025. Certified organic & biodynamic."
5 Stars & 19.0-/20 Raymond Chan, September 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Brilliant light golden-hued yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly presented, revealing a deep, concentrated core of ripe yellow stonefruits, along with integrated creamy barrel-ferment notes, subtle savoury nutty elements and a suggestion of spicy oak, unfolding mineral detail. The nose grows in richness with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is initially restrained in expression, but blossoms in richness, revealing harmoniously entwined flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits, with soft, creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak elements. The palate has excellent presence and is driven by a little alcoholic power with fresh, lacy acidity providing energy and vibrancy. The wine has strong linearity, flowing along a fine-textured phenolic thread, carrying to a long and sustained finish of stonefruits and nuts. This is a rich and complex, harmoniously melded Chardonnay with stonefruit and nutty flavours, freshness and power. Serve with roasted poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the older vines, indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months on lees in 15% new Louis Latour French oak with batonnage, preferring minimal MLF. Certified BioGro organic and certified Demeter biodynamic."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Millton's exceptional Chardonnay is based on ungrafted, unirrigated vines, over 25 years old, in the steep, north-east-facing Naboth's Vineyard in the Poverty Bay foothills. Grown biodynamically and hand-harvested, it is fermented with indigenous yeasts in mostly second-fill French oak barriques, and has usually not been put through malolactic fermentation, 'to leave a pure, crisp mineral flavour'. A powerful wine, it is also notably stylish and complete. The 2015 vintage is a good but not great vintage. Bright, light yellow/green, it has a restrained bouquet, leading into a weighty, rich palate with deep grapefruit and peach flavours, showing excellent complexity, fresh acidity, and a well-structured, faintly buttery, long finish. Still youthful, it should be at its best 2019+."
