Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"The coastal Te Awanga vineyard has proven a special site for Chardonnay and the 2015 vintage gave us the quality of fruit to make and release a Reserve wine. These wines are only released if they measure up to our highest expectations of quality."
Top 5 & 5 Stars Cuisine Chardonnay Tasting, August 2017
"Winemaker Steve Skinner has crafted a lovely expression, where lemon curd meets smoky flintiness. They grow and dance in step all the way across the palate with poise and precision. This is a complex style with real fruit power, but also harmony and balance. Try it with pan fried snapper and lemon juice."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Estate-grown at Te Awanga, the very youthful and tightly structured 2015 vintage was hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for a year in French oak barrels (30 per cent new). Highly fragrant, with citrusy, mealy aromas, it is mouthfilling, sweet-fruited and finely poised, with fresh, intense, slightly peachy and toasty flavours, good acid spine and obvious potential. A classy, complex wine, it's well worth cellaring to 2019+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Win Orbit, February 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"From their Te Awanga vineyard near the coast, this impressively styled chardonnay offers gloriously attractive aromas of ripe stone fruit, citrus peel, brioche, cedar and vanilla on the nose. The palate is concentrated and beautifully weighted, and delivers layers of fine texture and delectable flavours, brilliantly structured by bright acidity. This should evolve magnificently. At its best: now to 2020."
94/100 Bob Campbell MW, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"A step-up on the regular label, also from the winery’s coastal Te Awanga vineyard, with more concentration, a smoother texture and greater savoury complexity. Grapefruit, a suggestion of pineapple, with toasted nut, spicy oak and caramel in the background. Should develop well. Drink 2017 - 2021."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Bright, light straw-yellow colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is firmly concentrated with intense and powerful aromas of white and yellow stonefruits melded with mealy complexities and nutty oak, along with layers of flinty lees elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate features intense and concentrated flavours of ripe white and yellow stonefruits entwined with complexing mealy notes, unfolding layers of nutty oak and flinty lees reduction. The palate has body, power and drive, and flows along a very fine-textured, near seamless line with underlying acid tension and energy. The wine carries to a long, elegantly concentrated finish of stonefruits, nuts, flint and toasty oak. This is a concentrated and intensely flavoured, complex Chardonnay with layers of stonefruits, mealy elements, nutty oak and subtle flinty lees. Match with grilled and roasted poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5 years. Clone 15 and 95 fruit from the Te Awanga vineyard, hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak with batonnage and 20% MLF."
