Well it's a very rare and auspicious occasion when a Riesling tops the tasters picks for the night at one of our tastings. Chosen over and above some other very special wines from Ceres in Bannockburn, Central Otago. But it's not surprising as this Riesling is simply drop dead gorgeous.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"Ceres Riesling is the most recent addition to the wines produced by Ceres. The initial wine released was grown on Full Circle Vineyard. Riesling is planted on Full Circle, Black Rabbit and Swansong Vineyards. We have chosen to release a Black Rabbit Riesling - the site is creating wines that are distinctive and reflect the schist soils the grapes are grown on.
Ripe lemon, lime and citrus characters combine with melon and a touch of stone fruit. This Riesling is just off dry with 45g/l residual sugar to balance a mineral and acid backbone. Drinking well now or will reward cellaring for 2-7 years."

"An engaging, pure and beguiling bouquet of mandarin, lime flower, green apple and white peach. Noticeably sweet and very seductive with marmalade being welcomed onto the palate. Intensely concentrated with lean, elegant structure. Delicious and very well made."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Already delicious, the classy, flavour-packed 2017 vintage was grown in the Black Rabbit Vineyard at Bannockburn, fermented with indigenous yeasts and made in a medium-sweet (45 grams/litre of residual sugar) style. Pale lemon/green, it is richly scented, very lively, intense and racy, with penetrating, lemony, appley, slightly peachy flavours, vibrant, finely poised and long. Drink now or cellar."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, August 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with suggestions of green hues, near colourless on the rim. The nose is very elegant and tight with finely concentrated aroma of white and yellow stonefruits, subtle citrus fruit notes, some honeysuckle and thirst-quenching wet-stone minerals. The freshness is attractive and the aromatics build in intensity with aeration.. Sweet to taste and light-bodied, the palate features fragrant and aromatic, bright and lively fruit flavours of limes with white and yellow floral and honeysuckle. The fruit richness and residual sugar lend a near unctuous mouthfeel which is balanced by plenty of fruit extract and fine phenolic textures, and refreshing, lacy acidity. This has lovely poise, and the succulent fruit flavours carry to an elegantly concentrated finish with soft mineral nuances. This is a beautifully rich and luscious, near unctuous medium-sweet Riesling with lime, floral and honied flavours, fine textures and mineral element. Clean fruit with no botrytis, from the ‘Black Rabbit’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented in tank to 10.6% alc. and 45 g/L RS."
Sue Courtney, wineoftheweek.com, October 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"This instantly attractive Riesling has an intensely floral and tropical fruit scent with a vibrant citrussy zing. It’s deliciously juicy and quenching to the taste with fruit reminiscent of wind-fallen heritage apples accented with lime and tangelo zest. It’s a lower alcohol style with scintillating acidity that makes the medium sweetness seem more like off dry. Superb wine."
91/100 IWC 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Lively, vibrant citrus notes. Lemon and white peach on the palate and a long mineral finish."
