Domaine Labet's "Lias" sits within their Les Juvéniles range, made from old-vine Chardonnay planted between 1975 and 1994 on Lias marl over Bathonian limestone – one of the more distinctive soil profiles in the southern Jura. The 2022 spent 34 months in a mix of 228L, 500L and 600L barrels with no additions whatsoever, bottled August 2025.
Pale gold with a greenish tint in the glass, lighter than the élevage might suggest. Initially quite muted and firmly mineral on the nose – chalky and precise – but given 15 minutes or so it gradually revealed hazelnut, fresh lemon, and delicate pear. Not a wine that gives itself away immediately.
The palate is taut and medium-bodied, driven by bright, mouthwatering acidity. Flavours track the nose closely: lemon, pear, hazelnut, with that same chalky minerality running underneath. Nothing extraneous.
The finish is long and clean, with a slightly bitter almond edge at the very end. Drinking well now but clearly has room to grow; another three to five years should be rewarding.
