Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Imagine a dark chocolate brownie, baked in a wood-fired oven and finished with a dollop of plum compote. Deeply coloured and exhibiting both sweet and savoury aromatics – think pumpernickel, bramble berries and the soft scent of lilac. The palate rivals in complexity, with tamarillo, wild cherry and grilled nectarine flavours, underpinned by dusty tannins and a long, driven finish.
The grapes were hand-harvested and chilled overnight prior to hand-sorting. Most of the fruit was then destemmed into open-top fermenters, the majority of which also had a percentage of whole-bunch inclusion. The fruit was left to soak on skins prior to the onset of indigenous yeast fermentation, then plunged daily. After fermentation, the wine was pressed, racked and filled into French oak barriques (30% new). Individual clones were barrel-aged separately for 11 months, prior to blending in January 2024."
98/100 Susie Barrie MW & Peter Richards MW (UK), Susie & Peter New Zealand Wines of the Year 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"Evocative autumnal aromas of dried plums, woodsmoke and fresh summer berries lead into a complex, layered palate profile featuring fine grippy tannins, sweet spice notes and a long, classy, textured finish. Very self-assured, beautifully poised and with a winning combination of energy, vitality and grace, it’s a show-stopping wine that has the structure to age well to boot."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Fabulous bouquet with complexity and depth, purity of fruit and a sense of site, winemaking style and intrigue. Aromas and flavours of spiced blackcurrant and dark cherry, hay and dried herb, stone and barrel smoke and violet. Dry, a firm texture with polished tannins and medium+ acid line. As the wine opens out in glass the core flavours and texture show more intensity and complexity, a wine that will continue to age and develop. Best drinking from 2027 through 2037."
95/100 Emma Jenkins MW, Decanter, October 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Quite a reductive start, needs a bit of air to get going but then there are plenty of layered, complex aromatics – black cherry, plum and bramble, subtle herb, earth forest floor and rye bread. The palate is equally layered and surprisingly elegant given the brooding density, with a tight-knit core of wild cherry, tamarillo and earth, dusty, fine tannins and a long, savoury finish."
93/100 Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front, July 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"This is ripe and expressive, bouncy, with black cherry and smoked meat, fresh herbs, sour blackberry, coffee bean and mint leaf. Tannins are fine and chewy; the aftertaste is juicy and spicy. Plenty of flavour and life in this wine. Very taste-bud-engaging."
