SMITH & SHETH CRU HERETAUNGA CHARDONNAY 2016 is available to buy in increments of 1

This is from 15 - 20yo vines in the Redmetals area. The vineyard has soils enriched by calcium from a local spring resulting in quite a high ph which ultimately impacts of the grapes – think chalky acidity. Partially wild yeast fermented in 40% new oak with full malo-lactic. A savoury style with cashew nut, melon and some tropical fruit and quite upfront and immediately appealing.

Who are Smith & Sheath?
"We are in the business of creating great wines that bring great pleasure. Pleasure that comes from consuming great wine made by fine people to be shared with good friends. As contemporary negociants Steve Smith and Brian Sheth seek out the exceptional. We have made the most of over 35 years of experience with the growers and makers of New Zealand – forging relationships, hand selecting the best parcels from exceptional vineyards only, then nurturing, blending and bottling these wines. Establishing steadfast relationships with the land, growers and makers who form the DNA of our CRU.

The french call it terroir - a sense of place. In New Zealand we have our own defining word - turangawaewae - our place to stand in the world - it describes the special connection of a people and the land they live, love and work in. Our wines reflect the magic and alchemy of this relationship and the true beauty of these places. CRU has been chosen to collect these wines under one banner as it is the only word that exists that means “vineyards of exceptional quality.”

Each wine also has the Maori designation that relates to its whenua (land) origins. The labels have a unique design embossed within that represent the genomes sequence of the grape varieties we are working with. The DNA that is natural to the vine and to the vineyard ecosystem is reflected in each and every wine we make. Our names, Steve Smith and Brian Sheth, are the assurance of a wine that will give inordinate pleasure. Let us share with you the pleasure, culture and craft of our wine."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Already delicious, the debut 2016 vintage was hand-harvested from mature vines in Hawke's Bay, and fermented and lees-aged for 11 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new). Light lemon/green, with a fragrant, complex bouquet, it is weighty, with highly concentrated grapefruit and peach flavours, finely integrated oak, and a rounded, lasting finish. Still youthful, it should be at its best 2020+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit. March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"From the Bridge Pa district, this gloriously complex chardonnay shows fabulous aromas of ripe stone fruit, nougat, toasted hazelnut, subtle spice and brioche on the nose. The palate is concentrated and powerfully expressed, while remaining properly structured and balanced, displaying outstanding fruit weight and intensity with creamy mouthfeel and perfectly pitched acidity. Engaging and gratifying. At its best: now to 2023."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is firmly concentrated and penetrating with up-front aromas of white stonefruits and citrus fruit entwined with bold aromas of gunflint sulphide reductive complexities along with nutty oak and mineral elements. The aromatics fill the nose unfolding toasty oak. Full-bodied, the palate has bright and vibrant flavours of white stonefruits and citrus fruit forming a taut core. The fruit intermingles with refined gunflint reduction and nutty oak complexities. The mouthfeel is smooth-flowing and slippery, and energised by fresh, lacy acidity. The palate has an elegantly proportioned line with drive and tension that carries to a long, crisp finish. Full and concentrated on the nose, this is a taut but vibrant and fine-flowing Chardonnay with stonefruit, gunflint and nutty flavours on a crisp palate. Serve with seafood and poultry over the next 5 years. Hand-picked fruit from the Bridge Pa Triangle, vines 15-20 y.o., pressed with stems and fully barrel-fermented with cloudy juice, partially by indigenous yeasts to 13.3% alc., the wine aged 11 months on lees in 40% new French oak barriques, the wine undergoing MLF."
91/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Very engaging bouquet centering on the use of ripe fruit and oak. Aromas of ripe white and yellow peach grapefruit and lemon tones then apple. Plenty of wood scents with vanilla and and baking spices, toasty oak and cashew. Dry on the palate with flavours that reflect the nose, plenty of wood and ripe fruit, medium+ acidity and lengthy finish. Balanced though quite youthful and developing still. Drink now and through 2026."
