Pinot Blanc is, as the name suggests, the white mutation of Pinot Noir and is also related to Pinot Gris. Although very common in Europe – Alsace, Northern Italy, Germany, Austria – it has never really taken off with producers here in NZ. A shame really as it can produce a wonderful wine especially one such as this. Dry and fruity this is a pleasure to drink.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Perfumed white peach and floral aromas with a hint of peppered spice. Fresh green apple and honeydew melon layered with citrus peel. The palate displays crisp bright acidity with fresh fruit sweetness and an oily texture."
92/100 David Walker Bell, winefolio.co.nz, November 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"Still a relatively rare varietal in New Zealand, this Marlborough wine comes from a vineyard that was used as a camp for the Airforce in the Second World War. Translucent green/straw in the glass, with aromas of peach, apricot, lemon peel, apple, melon, white florals and wet stones. The palate shows some sweet fruit well bolstered with a zesty acidity, a little prickle of peppery phenolics and tannin. Well structured and quite dry with some herbal flavours of tarragon and sorrel, then settles into a waxy texture that has a hint of creme fraiche to it. Finishes long and pure – a delicious aperitif wine, or one for the lunch table."
4 Stars Cuisine NZ Other Whites Tasting, February 2024 (2023 Vintage)
"Pale in the glass despite some time spent in bottle with an understated nose of green peaches and some hints of nuttiness. The palate is refined and pure with a stunning creamy texture and a taut acid line that adds precision. "
Reviews for the 2019 vintage below…
4 Stars Michael Cooper, December 2022 (2019 Vintage)
"Grown at the confluence of the Wairau and Waihopai rivers, west of Renwick, the 2019 vintage was tank-fermented and lees-aged. Still youthful, it is full-bodied and vibrantly fruity, with fresh, citrusy and peachy flavours, balanced acidity and a dry (2 grams/litre of residual sugar), lingering finish."
