Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2020
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Our newest wine to be released in our Premium Collection, following on from the Black Poplar Block Pinot Noir. 'Soli Vero' – Soil Truth is a wine built on a cornerstone of authenticity. Single-vineyard sourced from Bendigo, Central Otago.
Both in the vineyard and the winery the site and wine is managed and tended to in a custodial manner. Continually ensuring the wine is guided to a true expression of the terroir and framed in an honest reflection of the land from whence it came.
This wine delivers aromatics of subtle red cherry and well-integrated oak. Notes of dark plums with well-balanced fruit on the palate and fine elegant tannins that develop in a long complex finish."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, April 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Soli Vero literally translates to ‘alone true’. Medium-bodied pinot noir with a super-smooth texture and ripe plum, cherry, violet and spicy oak flavours. Attractive, supple and approachable wine with the ability to age well."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"The delicious 2018 vintage, grown at Bendigo, is a single-vineyard red (Soli Vero means ‘Soil Truth’), matured for nine months in French oak barriques (20 per cent new). Ruby hued, it is mouthfilling and supple, with well-ripened cherry, plum and spice flavours, fresh acidity, nutty, savoury notes adding excellent complexity, and impressive depth. Best drinking 2022+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Sweetly fruited and splendidly complex, the wine shows dark cherry, spiced plum, vanilla, dark mushroom and hazelnut characters on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and beautifully fleshy mouthfeel, gorgeously supported by silky texture and polished tannins. Multi-layered and savoury with a lengthy engaging finish. At its best: now to 2026."
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Vibrant, youthful and varietal bouquet of Pinot Noir with aromas of soil and fruit, wood spices and complexity. On the palate – flavours of red apples and dark cherries, red tea and plum. There’s a definitive savoury sweet spot mid-palate highlighted by the toasty wood and carried by the refreshing acidity and tannins. Additional flavours and textures of dried herb and fine fruit tannins add length and complexity as well. A balanced and well made wine, still youthful, but also drinkable from today and through 2024+."
5 Stars & 19/20 Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, September 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Deep, ruby-red with some transparency, slightly lighter on the rim with a deep purple hue. The bouquet is full and deep with savoury fruit of black cherries, black plums and berries, entwined with thyme herbs, unfolding baking spices and earthy mineral elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full with rich flavours of savoury black cherries and plums, enriched by broody dark thyme, earthy minerals and subtle spices. The mouthfeel is opulent, supported by smooth, silky tannin extraction, flow with integrated lacy acidity along an earthy mineral drive. The fruit has richness and concentration, sweet-scented with savoury balance underlying alcohol power lends a long sustained finish. This is an opulent Pinot Noir with flavours of sweet and savoury balanced fruit, along with thyme and spices nuances underlined silky tannin and earthy mineral details. Match with slow-cooked lamb shoulder and tea-smoked duck over the next 8-10 years. 100% Pinot Noir from Bendigo, fermented to 14% alc. Biogro organic certified. Aged in French oak barriques for 9 months, 20% new oak."
