Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"With aromas of fresh lime zest, white peach and fragrant gardenias, flavours of fine wool and bush honey are enhanced by quince and ripe bouche pear aromas with a waxy tingling aftertaste.  The balance of acidity with subtle sweetness makes an approachable wine at a young age and showing a huge potential for ageing.

The Te Arai vineyard is five kilometres from the sea. "Te Arai" roughly translates to “the place where you pause before going on towards the land of eternal sunshine.” Quite appropriate for this wine, I thought. This maritime proximity underlies the wine’s unique South Pacific style. The silt soils give fragrance while the occasional incidence of botrytis, generated by the autumnal mists from the Te Arai stream, give complex texture, body and a sense of sweetness to the wine. In the Loire Valley of France, Chenin Blanc produces powerful wines of a similar character, which we refer to as our touchstone."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"An outstanding rendition; the gloriously complex bouquet shows baked apple, fig, floral and lemon zest characters with the classic wet wool nuance. It is superbly fruited and powerful on the palate, and offers impressive weight and texture, brilliantly supported by subtle sweetness and firm acidity, finishing extremely long and engaging. At its best: now to 2026. Certified organic & biodynamic."

4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Certified organic, this Gisborne wine is New Zealand's best-known Chenin Blanc. It's a richly varietal wine with concentrated, fresh, vibrant fruit flavours to the fore in some vintages, nectareous scents and flavours in others. The grapes are hand-picked at up to four stages of ripening, culminating in some years ('It's in the lap of the gods,' says James Millton) in a final harvest of botrytis-affected fruit. Fermentation is in tanks and large, 600-litre French oak casks, used in the Loire for Chenin Blanc. The 2016 vintage is bright, light yellow/green. A medium-bodied wine, with plenty of personality, it has vibrant, peachy, faintly honeyed fruit flavours, showing good concentration and complexity, a sliver of sweetness (7 grams/litre of residual sugar), moderate acidity, and good aging potential. Best drinking 2019+."

90/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Attention grabbing bouquet of wild honey and quince, fresh and baked apple, old oak spices and green tea. On the palate – just off-dry with a gentle level of sweetness and contrasting acidity; wild fruits and flowers; apple, quince and manuka honey-laced flavours, gentle spice layer returns, moderate weight and alcohol with a lengthy finish. Drink now and through 2024."

4 Stars & 18.0/20 Raymond Chan, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Brilliant, light yellow colour with light golden hues and some depth, paler on the rim. The nose is very fresh and taut in concentration with a good, deep core of white stonefruits and white florals with fresh straw notes and nuances of wet-stone minerals. Dryish to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate is very fresh and bright with a finely concentrated heart of white stonefruits and white florals along with thirst-quenching mineral flavours. The mouthfeel is crisp and dry, the acidity very refreshing, and the wine flows along a very fine-textured phenolic threaded line. The flavours remain tightly bound, adding linearity, and the wine carries to a long, finely bound stonefruit and mineral finish. This is a taut, refreshing and thirst-quenching dry Chenin Blanc with white stonefruit, floral and mineral flavours. Serve as an aperitif and with seafood over the next 5-6 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Te Arai’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented in 600 L demi-muids and tank to 11.5% alc. and 7.4 g/L RS, the wine aged 8 months prior bottling. Certified BioGro organic and certified Demeter biodynamic."
