94% Viognier & 6% Marsanne
The Millton's first planted their Viognier vines in 1997 on the river plains, some of the first in the country and with some 16 vintages behind them, this is a wine that is now really singing. Fermented in a mix of oak and stainlees steel with a portion also with extended skin contact for 30 days. There is a portion of Marsanne included. This is a really textured, almost slippery wine, golden autumnal fruits and a distinct briny/umami flavour – a wine with an amazing personality. Perfect wine tings like pork belly and Asian inspired dishes.
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"A haunting wine with bristling delicacy, buoyed by a noted mineral edge. Poached pear and warm croissant give a spiced and sappy appeal. The salinity sings the proximity of the vineyard to its maritime environment. We consider the aromatic delight of Viognier will enhance and partner foods high in Umami flavours. Drink now through to 2020 with happiness."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A gorgeous offering; the fragrant bouquet shows ripe apricot, rockmelon, orange peel and rich floral aromas, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate that is delectable and expansive. It is mouthfilling and plush, yet brilliantly structured by refreshing acidity, making it a terrific drink. At its best: now to 2020."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Raymond Chan, August 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, even light golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little paler on the edge. The nose is softly full and voluminous with aromas of apricots entwined with white and yellow stonefruits, florals and nuances of saline and minerals adding freshness and cut. This has excellent presence. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is full and gently mouthfilling with flavours of apricots, exotic tropical fruit and yellow stonefruits with lifted yellow florals. The fruit forms a finely concentrated core with light phenolic textures guiding the wine along a dry line. Background acidity lends energy, and the flavours lead to a long and sustained finish. This is a gently rich and smooth-flowing dry Viognier with bright apricotty fruit and fine textures guiding the wine to a long finish. Match with Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Riverpoint’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented in 300 L French oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks, with whole bunches fermented on skins for 30 days, to 12.5% alc. and 1.6 g/L RS, blended with 6% Marsanne from the ‘Opou’ vineyard and 2% Muscat from the ‘Riverpoint’ vineyard. Certified Biogro organic and Demeter biodynamic."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"The very characterful 2016 vintage was hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in tanks and French oak hogsheads. Marsanne was added to the blend (6 per cent), for 'depth and richness', and a splash of Muscat (2 per cent) for a 'fruity lift'. Certified organic, it is a medium-bodied, fully dry style (1.6 grams/litre of residual sugar), yellow/pale gold, with gentle acidity and strong, peachy, slightly spicy, vaguely honeyed flavours, showing excellent richness and complexity."
