Winery notes (2012 Vintage)
"Ironclad is named in honour of the 19th Century warships characterised by the iron armour bolted onto their wooden hulls, much as iron courses through the veins of our warm clay hillside vineyards.

Predominantly Merlot and Cabernet franc, the nose has aromas of sweet ripe fruit with lifted aromas of crushed red berries and darker cassis with hints of floral perfume from the Malbec and Petit Verdot with a flourish of tobacco and cedar from the Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is vibrant, exuding ripe fruit and a rich texture finishing with supple fine grained tannins. The 2012 Ironclad is a fine example of what Waiheke can achieve in a cooler vintage. It has great fruit accessibility with a powerful structure coated in luxuriant fruit, supple yet powerful. It is an engaging wine in its youth that will reward patient cellaring revealing a refined structure and greater complexity with age. This is our greatest Ironclad yet."

5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, July 2016 (2012 Vintage)
"A remarkable wine from a challenging vintage. Dense, ripe, sweet berry and plum flavours with nuances of cedar, cigar box, cassis, Christmas cake and oriental spices. Deliciously drinkable now but no rush. Ageing: now to 2023. Food match: Organic lamb with smoked potato, artichokes, mushrooms, silverbeet, tarragon."

5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, May 2018 (2012 Vintage)
"Full, dark, deep ruby-red with black hues and slight garnet tints on the rim. The bouquet is softly full and densely packed with a complex amalgam of savoury dark-red plum fruit with earth, dried and dark herbs. This has richness and some secondary detail, all seamlessly interwoven to form a deep heart. Full-bodied, the palate has a fulsome and harmoniously interwoven array of complex flavours of savoury dark-red plum fruit with a layering of dried herbs and earth. The fruit has lusciousness and is underlined by fine, grainy tannin extraction lending plenty of texture and presence. The mouthfeel has a fine edge of acidity that underlines the fruit and the wine carries to a long and elegant, complex, savoury finish. This is a rich and lusciously harmonious complex Merlot/Franc-based blend with an array of complex, savoury plum, earth and black-berried fruits, with plenty of body and grip with fine acidity. Match with slow-cooked game meat and casseroles over the next 10+ years. A blend of 29 components with 42% Cabernet Franc, 20% Malbec, 14% Petit Verdot, 13% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, indigenous yeast fermented without crushing to 15.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 35% new French oak. Considered the best ‘Ironclad’ to date."

4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2012 Vintage)
"Launched from 2008, this powerful red, grown at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, is typically a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with minor portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. From a very cool, late-ripening season, the 2012 vintage (4.5*), matured in French oak casks (40 per cent new), is deeply coloured, powerful, generous and sweet-fruited, with blackcurrant, herb and nut flavours, showing excellent concentration and potential."
