Each vintage special parcels are identified as being suitable for this label and this wine comes from their Watervale vineyard. The wine is darkly coloured and savoury with dark red fruits a hint of eucalypt, iodine and oakiness. There is plenty of structure in the wine with fine, gritty tannins.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Over the past 55 years our family has developed and nurtured a mosaic of vineyards across the Clare Valley, each unique in site, soil and aspect.Distinct parcels of fruit are selected to make wines that reflect the vineyard from which the grapes are grown. Picked at optimum ripeness from our Watervale vineyard and matured in French oak, this wine shows the elegance and restraint of this cool site.
Dark and broody on the nose, with intense aromas of plum, cherry and blackberry with savoury spiciness and dark florals. Plush, sweet black and blue fruits flow on the palate, with a touch of spice and fine savoury tannin to finish."
93/100 James Halliday's Wine Companion (2020 Vintage)
"15% whole bunch, matured for 11 months in big 2500L foudres. It's beautiful. What the large format oak does, is it supports the plushness of the fruit (a plushness that comes so, so naturally to shiraz in Clare) without adding any oaky artefact to the wine. It allows the spice and the texture of the fruit to stand on it own, and it is here that we see the magic. Utterly yum."
