Selected for the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
Gold Medal & 95/100 – Decanter World Wine Awards 2019
Gold Medal – New Zealand Wine of the Year Awards 2019
One of the most awarded, yet one of the most under-the radar Central Otago Pinot Noir labels. From a single vineyard planted entirely in Pinot Noir on the south side of the basin across the Clutha River from the Alexandra township. It has garnered a string of impressive awards since the first vintage in 2006 and now has deservedly been included in the list of New Zealand's Finest wines 2019, compiled by 8 Masters of Wine and Sommelier. This has to represent some of the best value, quality Pinot to come out of Central.
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, April 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Fragrant pinot noir with attractive floral notes together with fleshy plum, dark cherry, wet stone and mineral characters. More weight and fruit intensity than usual perhaps thanks to vintage conditions and vine age. Impressive purity and length. Should age well."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in Alexandra, this is typically a great buy. From vines planted in 2003, the 2017 vintage was matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (28 per cent new). Still extremely youthful, it has deep, purple-flushed colour. A powerful young red, it has intense, vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, savoury and earthy notes adding complexity, firm tannins, and excellent freshness, density and length. Open 2020 onwards."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, November 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A complex and intriguing bouquet of Pinot Noir with suggestions of ripe red berry fruits, layers of wood spice and dried herbs, a dark rose and lavender combination, a deep seated earthy quality and most importantly Pinosity and charm. Delicious on the palate with textures and fruit flavours forming synergies and power balancing the youthful grip of chalky tannins and acidity. Long finish, a lovely wine. Decant for service with best drinking from today and through 2025."
95/100 Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Ample ripeness of red fruits and charming aromas of violet, thyme and plum. Structured and silky on the palate, bursting with freshness, generous and ripe."
19/20 Joelle Thomson, July 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"This 7.8 hectare vineyard in Earnscleugh, Alexandra, takes its name from the endangered protected species of grasshopper, Sigaus childi, found near the
vineyard. Alexandra is one of the edgiest places in New Zealand to grow grapes and wines from here are marked by crisp, refreshing acidity as a result. This gives them their zingy quality and makes silky, savoury, superbly delicious wines with great ageing ability. Grasshopper Rock is one of my favourite Central Otago Pinot Noirs for its silky mouthfeel, fresh vibrant style, excellent consistency every year and accessible price."
17+/20 Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com (2017 Vintage)
"Light to mid crimson with some blue. Lifted raspberry fruit but sweet fresh cherry on the palate. Oak spice is evident but in balance. Some very nice hints of crushed herbs. Firm but finely textured tannins with fruit spilling out all over. Lots of thyme as it opens."
