The 2013 Vintage of this wine picked up multiple Trophies and Gold Medals from New Zealand wine shows and around the globe. A wine that is quickly becoming a New Zealand classic, there is value plus to be found here. From another outstanding Hawkes Bay vintage, the 2014 continues to build on the growing reputation of Church Road wines. A wine with rich plum and berry fruit is complemented by lifted floral aromas and underpinned by a savoury oak and earthy complexity. The palate is rich and long driven by a firm, fine-grained tannin structure.

Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"This is a serious, multidimensional Merlot. The heart of this wine is its dense, brooding plum and dark berry fruit. This is complimented by lifted aromas reminiscent of roses, cedar, sandalwood and warm spice, while the oak delivers underlying dark chocolate and savoury notes. The palate is rich, weighty and long driven by a firm yet fine-grained tannin structure."

5 Stars & 19.0-/20 Raymond Chan, July 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Very dark, black-red colour, near impenetrable, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is very full and softly voluminous with densely packed aromas of ripe black plums with blackberries, hints of liquorice, and fragrant black florals. Soft, sweet nutty oak and spice emerge along with earthy and mineral detail. The nose is one of density. Full-bodied, the palate has richly sweet and densely packed flavours of opulently ripe black plums, blackberries, with liquorice and earthy notes, along with spices and nutty oak. The mouthfeel is rich and succulent, the fruit well-balanced by fine-grained, powdery tannins providing good extract and structure. The acidity is integrated and the wine carries seamlessly to a plush, black plum and berried finish with spice and earth notes. This is a rich, succulently fruity, densely packed Merlot with black plums and berry fruit, long with earth, spices and oak on a fine-grained palate. Match with slow-cooked lamb dishes over the next 8-9+ years. 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 75% from the ‘Gimblett’ vineyard and 25% from the ‘Redstone’ vineyard, Bridge Pa Triangle, the fruit fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 3-5 weeks on skins and aged 20 months in oak, 36% new French and 3% new Hungarian."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
Estate-grown in the Gimblett Vineyard, in the Gimblett Gravels (75 per cent), and the Redstone Vineyard, in the Bridge Pa Triangle (25 per cent), the 2014 vintage was matured for 20 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels (39 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. A powerful, very ripe-tasting, sturdy red, it is deep and youthful in colour. Fragrant, rich and supple, it has very generous plum/spice flavours, hints of licorice and nuts, well-integrated oak and gentle tannins. Best drinking 2019+.

92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, September 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Mixed berries, camphor and cedar, mocha and mint. Medium bodied, earth and coffee, with bramble fruit, a touch of warmth, but lovely fleshy grainy tannin give it a sense of purpose, and the finish is again the mocha and smattering of dried herb. Like this. Good Merlot with a bit of character and perfume."
