Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Secateurs – shape our bushvines during the winter pruning and are used to pick the ripe grapes in summer. Our family has, for the last three generations, nurtured our vines so that they can produce fruit of integrity.
The aromas are perfumed, peppery, spicey, smokey and exhibit ripe red fruit notes. As always the palate texture of this style of wine is supple, smooth on the entry but with enough grip and freshness to finish dry and refreshing. In the mouth the texture and fineness of fruit tannin and drinkability of the wine is immediately evident."
91/100 Tim Atkin MW (2016 Vintage)
"One of those wines that you often find yourself plumping for if it’s on a wine list, this old wood-aged cuvée of Shiraz with Cinsault and Grenache is a triumph of the blender’s art. Spicy and aromatic, with bright, crunchy raspberry and red cherry fruit and a nip of tannin. Drink 2019 -2023."
90/100 Neal Martin, Vinous (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 Secateurs Red is a blend of mainly Shiraz with Cinsault and Grenache, although from 2017 it will shimmy over to a more Cinsault-dominated blend. It has an attractive bouquet of cranberry, wild strawberry and a light ferrous note – fresh and very alluring. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and crisp acidity, and sappy in the mouth, offering ample red berry fruit laced with black tea and sage towards the finish. Factor in the price and you can understand why this sells a lot of cases in the United States and the UK. Superb."
