Selected for the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
We think Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is one of the best releases under this label for a few years now. We always have high expectations of this wine as it has been our most popular Sauvignon Blanc for well over a decade now, and this release has well and truly surpassed those expectations.
It is consistently recognised as one of New Zealand's best and again made it on to 'New Zealand's Finest Wines of 2018' list. The effort that the Astrolabe team put into this wine is amazing – low yields, careful fruit selection from a range of vineyard sites around Marlborough and gentle pressing to avoid any aggressive characters resulting in a style that has taken years to achieve. The 2018 is a triumph.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
The Astrolabe Province Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made from grapes grown across three Marlborough sub-regions – the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley and the Kekerengu Coast. We machine harvest the grapes at night or in the cool parts of the day to preserve the purity and intensity of flavours. In the winery, we take great care to handle the fruit in a way which allows the flavours and aromas of the region to come through. Sauvignon Blanc is widely considered by the wine drinkers of the world to reach its pinnacle of potential in Marlborough. My style is dry, expressive and elegantly balanced. – Simon Waghorn, Winemaker.
Pale straw with green highlights. Aromas of lemon grass, lime peel and elderflower, with background notes of white currant and red pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with white peach, gooseberry and citrus flavours, and a dry mineral finish."
95/100, 5 Stars & Number 3 Rated 2018 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, November 2018 (2018 Vintage)
"Bright, fresh and concentrated sauvignon blanc with punchy regional and varietal favours including capsicum, nettle, gooseberry, melon and subtle passionfruit. A deliciously accessible wine that delivers everything I expect from Marlborough sauvignon… and more"
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"The skilfully crafted 2018 vintage is a regional blend, grown in the Awatere Valley (58 per cent), Southern Valleys (26 per cent), the Lower Wairau (5 per cent) and at Kekerengu (11 per cent). Made in a fully dry style (1.6 grams/litre of residual sugar), it is a very harmonious wine, full-bodied, with strong tropical-fruit and herbaceous flavours, lees-aging notes adding complexity, and a dry (1.6 grams/litre of residual sugar), very harmonious finish."
