Selected for the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Multi-faceted nose of blood plums and red cherries; with star anise, nutmeg and cinnamon; and garrigue – brambles, wild thyme, heather, rosehip and crushed herbs. The palate structure is lithe; the acids are juicy yet taut, and the fine supple tannins lengthen the smoky mineral finish. The flavour spectrum finishes with earthy notes from the vineyards – schist gravels and river pebbles."
Winemaker notes (2018 Vintage)
"I love the transparency in this vintage of Akarua Pinot Noir. By that I mean I can really see the rugged beauty of our mountain vineyards in the wine. The wild thyme, rosehip and scrubby brambles are so present, as is a perfume of the rocks and bony soils of the mountains. Vine age is really starting to play its part, as the flavours in the fruit reflect a picture of the vineyards in a complex and intriguing way."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Estate-grown, hand-picked from mature vines and aged for 11 months in French oak barriques (27 per cent new), the 2017 vintage is a bold, finely textured red. Fragrant, mouthfilling and supple, it is crammed with concentrated, ripe plum, cherry and spice flavours, showing great vigour and potential. Still very youthful, it's best cellared to 2021+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, April 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Akarua have achieved a remarkable consistency of style and high quality with this label over many years. This is as good as ever with typically svelte, dense and succulent plum, dark cherry and thyme flavours with a seasoning of spicy oak and a drop-dead gorgeous texture. Very Bannockburn."
5 Stars & No. 2 Cuisine Pinot Noir Tasting, April 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A youthful yet complex wine with a wonderfully seductive aroma. The palate is toasty with an intensely rich fruit profile. The tannin structure is generous and warm which will soften and integrate with further cellar ageing."
95/100 IWC 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Dark Cherry and spice nose with very deep colour. Pleasant tones of integrated toast and vanilla oak tones."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Raymond Chan, July 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Dark, deep ruby-red colour with purple hues, a little lighter on the rim and youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly presented with a fine core of ripe dark-red cherry and plum fruit along with nuances of spice, dark herbs and a little toasty oak. The aromatics harmoniously unfold detail and layers of interest. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a finely proportioned palate with an elegant heart of ripe dark cherry, berry and plum fruit, with harmoniously integrated flavours of Middle Eastern spices, dark herbs and a little toasty oak. The fruit richness is balanced by lacy acidity and underlined by fine-grained tannin extraction and structure, and the wine carries to a long lingering spicy finish. This is a finely proportioned Pinot Noir with dark cherry, berry and plum fruit along with spice and toasty oak detail on a fine-structured palate. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 5+ years. 60% clones 5, 6, 13, 115 from the home ‘Cairnmuir’ vineyard and 40% clones 5, 777, 667, 115 and 113 from the company’s ‘Felton Road’ vineyard, vines 21 y.o., fully destemmed and fermented, partially with indigenous yeasts to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 29% French oak barriques."
93/100 Jamie Goode, March 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Subtle roast coffee edge to the aromatic cherry and plum fruit nose. Elegant, refined cherry and plum fruit on the palate with some fine spiciness. Such a lovely, refined structure: there’s tannin but it integrates so well with the fruit. Harmonious."
Rebecca Gibb MW, January 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A supple and fleshy Pinot that's easy to like for its generous nature. The tannins are mellifluous and silken with a fine line of fresh acidity."
