"Fragrant with hints of violets and chocolate supported by elegant restrained tannins. This wine is another step in the evolution of Tom’s Block under Todd Stevens. The vision is always “less is more.” The fingerprint of the winemaker should be imperceptible, allowing the site to have a voice.
Our Moutere Clays provide an European edge – the fruit is kept in check with an uplifting minerality and vibrancy. A wine which never tires or bores but rather offers a full juicy mouthful with a lingering complex finish. Just as the wine flows to the end of your palate there is a surge of flavour maintaining a satisfying mouthfeel. Definitely drinkable but still precisely Pinot."
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Probably the most complex bouquet from a Tom's Block Pinot - aromas of ripe red and dark red berry fruits laced with scents of soil, oak and spices; a dark rose and sweet fruit tea layer, a mid-sniff concentration that suggests a little mystery and charm. On the palate - smooth silky tannins with an edginess that only a natural fermentation can deliver, concentrated and flavourful with messages of dark berries, oak, oak spice and balance, acid level is pretty much spot on, lengthy finish. Drink now and through 2025."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, June 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Dark, deep ruby-red colour with some black hues at heart, lighter on the rim. The nose is soft and gently voluminous with already complex aromas of ripe, savoury strawberry, cherry and raspberry fruit entwined with red floral, fresh and dried herbs and nuances of spice and undergrowth. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a richly sweet, vibrant core of dark-red cherry and berry fruit along with dark-red florals and subtle notes of fresh and dried herbs, with spice elements. The fruit is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and the mouthfeel possesses energy and vitality. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained tannin extract, providing a positively driven core and line, leading to a fine-textured, sweet-fruited, lingering finish. This is a deliciously rich, sweet-fruited Pinot Noir with dark red berry fruits and herb complexities on a bright, lively, finely extracted palate. Serve with poultry, pork, lamb and beef dishes over the next 5-6 years. Clones 5, 10/5, 667, 777, 113, Abel and 115, from the Neudorf ‘Home’ block, the ‘Flaxmore’ vineyard and ‘Pomona’ vineyard, all in the Upper Moutere, hand-picked, fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 22% new French oak."
93/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, September 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Neudorf seem incapable of putting a foot wrong with latest releases (and over past many years). Incredibly consistent, high quality, unique wines. Neudorf does have a bit of a Tolkien character sound to it, perhaps of the wizard sect. Neudorf the Purple.
Bold perfume of cranberry jam, Turkish delight, a sniff of dark chocolate, a flourish of green herbs. Quite lush in the palate but has a trimming corkscrew of fine tannins that finishes the wine in a chewiness, though a zing to acidity also follows. Quite generous and assertive in its way, with drinkability on its side. Bigger pinot done well."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"This regional blend can offer fine value. The 2015 vintage was hand-harvested at three Moutere sites (including the Home Block), matured in French oak barriques (22 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtration. Still unfolding, it is a deep ruby, mouthfilling red, savoury and smooth, with ripe plum, cherry and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, and excellent depth and complexity. Best drinking mid-2018+."
92/100 Jamie Goode, October 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Has a seductive nose with floral, tar and herb notes as well as sweet black cherry fruit. The palate has sweet dark fruits but also a brooding, more savoury character. It's expressive and a bit grippy on the finish, balancing the sweet fruit with savoury notes in a really attractive way."
90/100 Bob Campbell MW, June 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Medium-bodied pinot noir with dark cherry, plum, berry, spice and anise flavours. Quite a firmlystructured wine that will benefit from a little bottle age. Good food wine. Drink 2017 to 2022."
Yvonne Lorkin, October 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Opting to preserve every smidge of natural purity of flavour that viticulturist Richard Flatman has managed to coax into the pinot noir from Tom’s Block, winemaker Todd Stevens has bottled this wine without fining or filtration. It’s paid off in that it’s bursting with black tea, wild raspberry and cherry layers that wrap around zesty acidity and a lush, plush, textural finish. Gamy and gorgeous. Sip with: pork and duck sausages."
