We were quite taken with the 2015 vintage of this wine at our Vidal tasting with winemaker Hugh Crichton but we were absolutely blown away by the fact you could get a wine of this quality and this kind of price. The 2016 is a fantastic follow up and still provides fantastic value for money!

"This classic Hawkes Bay blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, reflects the 2016 vintage and our premium vineyard sites in the Gimblett Gravels. Expressive dark red fruits and spicy oak aromas lead into a palate showing depth, balance and length. Food Matches: Lamb, beef and hard cheeses."

"A consistently great buy. Already delicious, but still unfolding, the 2015 vintage is a blend of Merlot (75 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (18 per cent) and Malbec (7 per cent), matured for 16 months in French oak casks (24 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling, vibrantly fruity and supple, with excellent density of ripe, plummy, spicy flavours and a long, finely poised finish. A refined, savoury, age-worthy red, it should be at its best 2019+."

"Very dark, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, very youthful in appearance. The nose is very fine and elegantly concentrated with refined blackberry, black plum and nuances of blackcurrants and fragrant, spicy oak notes. The nose is has beautiful precision and focus. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in proportion with a finely concentrated core of succulently sweet and vibrant flavours of blackcurrants and black plums, unfolding nuances of cassis and dark herbs. The mouthfeel is poised with fine-grained tannins providing linearity and fresh, lacy acidity lending energy and vitality. The wine leads to a long, lingering, tightly bound finish of black fruits and herbs. This is a refined and elegantly concentrated Merlot/Cabernet blend with sweet fruit, fine-grained extract and a fresh, bright mouthfeel. Serve with lamb and beef dishes over the next 5-6 yeas. A blend of 75% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 24% new French oak barrels."

"​Engaging mix of scents led by oak then fruit with dark brown spices, toasty oak and dark fruits of plum and blackberry, a distinctive floral layer of dark rose adds complexity and charm. On the palate - juicy and salivating with ripe plum and red berry flavours with plenty of acidity and ripe tannins - showing a course silk to finer textures; cloves and vanilla toasty oak flavours; lengthy finish. Overall a very nice wine with a drink now appeal, though best from 2019 through 2028."
