Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The 2015/2016 growing season has produced a wine encapsulating concentration and restraint. Citrus, pink grapefruit, roasted nuts and fragrant flinty aromatics combine on a finely styled, textured and seamless palate. Showing harmony and complexity this classic Hawkes Bay Chardonnay will continue to age gracefully over time. Distinctive and ageworthy."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"This is seriously good; the engaging bouquet shows white stone fruit, fig, rockmelon and flinty characters with nuances of vanilla and cedar. The palate is superbly concentrated and impressively weighted, while remaining focused and poised, delivering elegant fruit intensity and fine texture, brilliantly structured by bright acidity. Restrained and elegant, the wine promises to develop magnificently. At its best: 2018 to 2024."
5 Stars & 19.5-/20 Raymond Chan, August 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour. The nose is very fine and fragrant, showing white florals and stonefruit aromas, along with delicate nutty notes, and nuances of gunflinty and minerally reduction. The nose is very poised and balanced, showing refinement and finesse. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in proportion, but possesses lovely intensity and penetration. The flavours of stomefruits, florals, nuts, flint and minerals balanced and interwoven, showing subtle sweetness and richness. The fruit, barrel-ferment and minerality are balanced with very fine acidity and the wine flows along a very fine-textured line. The wine carries to a very ling and sustained finish. The finesse and balance lends surprising accessibility, but this will age 4-5 years easily. Clone 15 Chardonnay from the ‘Lyons’, ‘Keltern’ and ‘Kokako’ vineyards, hand-picked, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months on lees 43% new French barriques and partial MLF. 28 barriques made."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Striking bouquet and very engaging with scents of gunflint, white peach, apple, lemon peel, sulphides, oak and white flowers, immediately complex, but also youthful and packed with energy. On the palate – equally youthful and engaging with flavours reflective of the nose; spritely acidity, medium+ weight, a very specific expression of Chardonnay. Will age for quite some time to come. Drink now (if you must) best from late 2018 through 2026+."
Yvonne Lorkin, September 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Oh lordy, what a wine! With its alluring aromas of grilled grapefruit, roast peach, toasted almonds and a hint of smoke, I struggled to peel the glass away from my nose for long enough to actually put any in my gob! Thankfully I persisted, because it’s ultra-fresh, beautifully layered with banging citrus and succulent stonefruit and follows through with a fat, fleshy finish. Glorious."
