Sustainable Vineyard of the Year - New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2017
Established in 2004 and certified BioGro organic since 2010, Urlar have been quietly doing some very good, and fairly serious things in the Gladstone region of Wairarapa. With the arrival of celebrated Central Otago winemaker Carol Bunn in time for the 2016 vintage there has been a slight shift in style and the resulting wines are showing a brighter, fruitier side along with fine textures and appeal without losing any of their complexity or integrity.
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2016 Vintage)
"Organic, vibrant, lively and distinctive bouquet with ripe citrus and soft herb aromas, laced with a hint of wild honey and mineral core. On the palate - crisp, fresh, great core of fruit, loads of texture and vibrant acidity leading to a lengthy and refreshing finish."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Drinking well now, the 2016 vintage was mostly tank-fermented; 7 per cent was fermented in old oak barrels. It's an aromatic, mouthfilling wine, vibrantly fruity, with good intensity of ripely herbaceous flavours and a finely balanced, dry (2.5 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Certified organic."
4 Stars & 18.0/20 Raymond Chan, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"..today it was on song. Very pale straw colour with pale green hues. The nose is fresh, vibrant and intense with an array of aromatics with a nod to the cooler spectrum, gooseberries predominating along with fresh herbs, cut grass and hints of tropical fruits. Dry, crisp, brisk and quite intensely deep with lively gooseberry fruit, distinctly mouthwatering with hints of minerals and saline. The wine follows a very fine-textured core and line."
91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"This partially barrel-fermented sauvignon displays delicate aromas of grapefruit, lemon peel, almond and subtle oatmeal on the nose. The palate is taut and elegantly fruited, and shows vibrant fruit characters with fine texture, leading to a lengthy mouth-watering finish. Very fine with subtle savoury complexity. At its best: now to 2020."
