"Clos des Pierres (place of stones). This wine was sourced from two Marlborough vineyards – The Spring in the Wairau Valley with 26 year old Mendoza vines on extremely stony soil, and our new Brookby Hill Vineyard in the Southern Valleys with Clone15 and B95 vines on clay soils. The fruit was hand harvested, lightly whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in barrel with intermittent stirring of the lees. Full malolactic fermentation occurred, followed by 11 months ageing in 25% new and seasoned French barrels. Unfined and unfiltered.

Bright yellow in colour, this sophisticated Chardonnay offers aromas of lemon balm and vanilla bean mingled with fresh hazelnuts and butterscotch. On the palate the wine is tightly knit, opening up to layers of lemon zest, tea tree, rosemary and marmalade, over toasted pine nut, buttermilk and flinty flavours. The artisan winemaking approach has resulted in a delicious wine, showing great complexity and underlying old vine minerality."

"Bright straw-yellow colour with slight golden hues, paler on the edge. The nose is full and gently voluminous with softly packed and complex layered aromas of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits, with mealy notes and creamy barrel-ferment elements, along with nutty oak. The nose unfolds lemon-curd MLF and toasty elements with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and well-concentrated, with densely packed flavours of ripe citrus and stonefruits, melded with creamy barrel-ferment, nutty oak and layers of lemon-curd and butterscotch MLF. The flavours are mouthfilling and balanced by crisp, lacy acidity, showing power and drive, carrying the fulsome flavours to a long and sustained finish of stonefruits, cream and nutty nuances. This is a rich, densely packed, mouthfilling Chardonnay with citrus fruit, creamy and toasty oak, and lemon-curd MLF on a powerfully driven palate. Match with creamy sauced seafood, and roasted poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5 years. A blend of Mendoza fruit from ‘The Spring’ vineyard in the Wairau Valley, vines 26 y.o. and clones 95 and 15 from the ‘Brookby Hill’ vineyard in the Southern Valleys, hand-picked, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak, undergoing batonnage and 100% MLF. 1,100 cases made."

"Chardonnay was (winemaker) Dave’s favourite variety, but he wasn’t keen on what he tasted from Marlborough. But in 2010 he found a block of 20+ year old Mendoza Chardonnay on the Rapaura Road on very stony soils. This forms 80% of this blend, and the balance is from Brookby Hill. The grapes are hand picked and are pressed to barrel with no sulfur dioxide. 20% new oak. This is toasty, bready, tight and focused with brisk grapefruit and lemon meshing well with the richer, toastier, more creamy flavours."
