One of the most exciting things happening in the New Zealand wine industry at present is the emergence of different expressions of Sauvignon Blanc. Whilst the simple fruity styles have their place, there is a growing demand for styles that have more nuances, texture and palate interest. Dave Clouston at Two Rivers has been evolving his version over the past few years, and this 2015 takes it to a new level. Very ripe, low yielding fruit was hand picked, whole bunch pressed with 60% wild fermented in 8 year old hogsheads and 40% in concrete eggs and aged on full lees in these vessels for 10 months. This is the first Egg fermented Sauvignon Blanc that we have seen and whilst we can't say that it is the egg that has made the difference, we absolutely love the end result. The flavours are of ripe fruits, nectarine especially, along with lemon, citrus and a full palate that evolves in the mouth, extending long through the finish.

"Aromas of lemon balm, grapefruit pith and tea tree, combine with dried herbs on the nose. The palate has granular texture with excellent concentration, balanced with juicy citrus notes, wet stone and chalky flavours and crystalline acidity. Extended lees ageing adds breadth, providing complexity and elegance."

"Still unfolding, the impressive 2015 vintage is a single-vineyard wine, grown in the Southern Valleys and matured for 10 months in a concrete egg-shaped tank (40 per cent) and seasoned oak hogsheads (60 per cent). Light lemon/green, it is weighty and unusually complex, with rich, ripe tropical-fruit flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, and a harmonious, dry (2.7 grams/litre of residual sugar), long finish. Best drinking mid-2017+."
