100/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2014 Vintage)
"When you combine exceptional winemakers, a stunning vineyard and a stellar vintage, the resulting wine is a compelling one. A glorious expression of the variety, this latest offering exhibits aromas of dark plum, spiced cherry, black olive, game and cedar on the nose, leading to a concentrated and richly fruited palate that is intense and formidable, while remaining perfectly poised and balanced. The wine offers layers of delectable flavours and rich texture, wonderfully framed by loads of polished tannins. This is not a huge monster, rather a stylish and refined rendition offering exceptional fruit purity as well as seductive complexity. At its best: 2018 to 2030."
99/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 Vintage)
"Dense, powerful and obviously youthful syrah with very concentrated dark berry, dried fruit, powdered chocolate, spice, anise and very subtle violet flavours. This is an exciting wine that has obviously been built to last but can still be appreciated even at this early stage of its potentially long life. It is, quite simply, the best Homage I have tasted. Drink 2016 - 2026."
98/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2014 Vintage)
"Immediately varietal and complex with aromas of ripe red and dark red berry fruits; meaty, dark and broody; violets and spices of peppercorn and oak with a layer of new oak and savoury tones; while the bouquet overall is of a youthful and fresh young wine there is an equal amount of complexity brooding. On the palate - full-bodied, rich, complex, fruity, layered, spicy and dry; flavours of crushed dark red berry fruits, sweet meat, fruit and oak lead spices; plenty of acidity and medium+ tannins together show-off the raw youthful energy and ageing potential of this well crafted example. The finish is considerably long, layered, complex and beguiling. Easily the best Homage I have had the pleasure of reviewing. And now I am going to drink a whole glass!"
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"One of the country's most distinguished – and expensive – reds. Harvested by hand, mostly from 19-year-old vines in the Gimblett Gravels, the outstanding 2014 vintage was matured for 14 months in French oak barriques (mostly new) and 5000-litre oak ovals. Dark and youthful in colour, it is mouthfilling, dense and yet supple, with a floral bouquet and highly concentrated plum, blackcurrant, spice and nut flavours. Impressively rich, complex and savoury, with good tannin backbone, it should flourish with long-term cellaring."
5 Stars & 19.5+/20 Raymond Chan, August 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Full, very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter edged, very youthful in appearance. The nose is very refined and elegantly expressed with aromas of pure and ripe black-berried fruits harmoniously melded with an array of fragrant black and violet florals, along with suggestions of spice and black mineral detail. The aromatics are tight and concentrated, build in intensity in the glass and exude immense finesse. Medium-full bodied, the palate is tightly bound and concentrated with intense and penetrating flavours of ripe blackberries, lifted by a range of fragrant black and floral notes. The fruit is complexed by fine iron-earth and black mineral elements, with suggestions of spice unfolding. The fruit is supported by considerable extraction, the powdery tannins providing a firm, near velvet-textured line. The palate flows with drive and underlying soft, ripe acidity lends the energy to carry to a taut, long-lingering finish of black fruits and an array of dark florals. This is a very refined, aromatic, individual Syrah with ripe black fruits and an array of fragrant florals and mineral complexities, on a seriously structured palate with very fine tannins. Match with roasted lamb, beef, venison and game meat over the next 12-15 years. Almost 100% hand-picked Syrah, including approx. 0.3% Viognier, from the company’s Gimblett Gravels vineyards, predominantly MS clone with a small percentage of clone 174, 60% destemmed and lightly crushed to leave a large portion of whole berries and 40% left as whole bunches, with fermentation to 13.8% alc., the wine spending on average 30 days on skins and aged 14 months in predominantly new French oak barriques with a portion in large 5000 L oak ovals."
94+/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front (2014 Vintage)
"Structure, architecture, tannin and tightness, that’s the theme. Perfume is really good, lots of dark fruit, crushed slate, fresh seaweed, black olives. The palate is sinewy and yet very, very deep in flavour, power packed with dark berry fruits, spice, fine oak character. Saturates the palate and lingers for ever. Touch of lemony tang spoils the finish, but that should mellow into the wine with very long cellaring time. Last impression is a gently drying mouth from the fine web of tannins. Power and class."
