We are seeing the emergence of more sophisticated styles of Hawkes Bay Syrah and the recent successes internationally of these wines reinforces just how good they are. The wine-making has moved to be more akin to Pinot Noir than Cabernet-like. Gentle extraction and around 20-30% whole bunch fermentation is just one example resulting in more finesse and greater complexity and concentration. This is a darkly coloured package of dense, sweet black fruits, spice/cloves, plump yet good back palate mouthfeel.
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Aromas of dark berries and spices laced with wood scents; Blue berry and black currant with Doris plum and blackberry; distinctive smoky wood tones laced with clove, bay leaf and Tahitian vanilla, pepper tones and dark broody violet moments. On the palate – very engaging with a core of acidity, tannins, fruit and wood all jostling for attention; lengthy finish, still very youthful and needs cellar time. Decant for service. Best from 2020 through 2030+"
5 Stars & 19.0+/20 Raymond Chan, September 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Very dark, black-hued ruby-red with purple tints, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant with a fine and intense aroma of ripe black berried fruits entwined with subtle dark raspberry fruit along with complexing savoury dark herb and whole bunch stalk elements. Black pepper, spices and florals add to the aromatic diversity. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich and succulent, juicy flavour of blackberries and dark raspberries melded with a layering of savoury dark herbs and whole bunch complexities, unfolding spice and black pepper suggestions, The mouthfeel is vibrant and lively, energised by lacy acidity, and the fruit is supported by well-balanced extract and tannin structure. The flavours blossom with florality and complex savoury herb and whole bunch notes, and carry to a long nd sustained, elegant finish. This is a rich, succulent and juicy Syrah with black fruits and complex layers of herbs and whole bunch on a well-structured, lively and elegant palate. This will aged 8-10+ years. 100% Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels, hand-picked and fermented with 25% whole bunches to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in new and seasoned oak barriques and 5,000 L oak ovals."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"From a wonderful vintage, this fabulous perfumed syrah shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, violet and clove characters with nuances of toasted almond and black pepper. The palate is succulent and beautifully weighted, and delivers elegance and fruit purity, brilliantly framed by plenty of polished tannins. The wine is charming and refined, and offers harmony and excellent drinkability. At its best: now to 2021."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Estate-grown and matured for 14 months in French oak barriques and 5000-litre ovals (new and old), the 2015 vintage is deeply coloured, mouthfilling and supple. Weighty, it has concentrated, plummy, spicy flavours, hints of herbs and tamarillos, and impressive complexity and harmony. Drink now onwards."
2016
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 Syrah has a deep and youthful vibrant crimson colour. Wild raspberry, blueberry, cracked pepper and hints of vanilla bean show on the nose. Powerful and balanced ripe tannins give the wine great savoury structure. Oak plays a supporting role with the wine living on a pure fruit expression. This purity combined with refreshing natural acidity mean there is excellent potential for aging. Development of mineral, gamey characters will result from bottle-age. Great with red meat dishes but especially good with game, particularly with duck and venison. Drink 2017 to 2027."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
